FONTANA
ELVINO (AL) FONTANA passed away at the Kipnes Centre for Veterans in Edmonton on February 16, 2012 at the age of 91 years. Elvino was born in Coleman, Alberta on January 15, 1921, where he spent a good portion of his youth. He met Emma (nee Rogers) in Coleman and they were married on October 3, 1941.
Elvino was predeceased by his wife of 68 years Emma, his parents Peter and Ida Fontana, his brothers Benny and Elmo Fontana, his sister Elsie Jackson, and his mother and father-in-law Isabella and Jonathan Rogers. Elvino leaves to celebrate his life and mourn his passing, his daughter Gaile (Paul) Rusznak, his son Roger (Verna) Fontana, and his daughter Lorraine (Ken) Martell, grandchildren LaVerne (Paul) Krizan, Sheri (Bob) Parsons, Robert (Sheri) Rusznak, Grant (Serenda) Fontana, Leanne (Duncan) Pottinger, Jill and Sean Martell, great grandchildren Michaela and Aiden Krizan, Robyn and Ryan Parsons, Jade and Kylan Rusznak, Emma and Noah Fontana.
Al began his life in Coleman where he lived until 1930 when his family moved to Big Valley. He fondly recalled his days in Big Valley and often shared stories of his adventures there. In 1935 the Fontana family returned to Coleman where dad reacquainted himself with Emma. They married in 1941, shortly before he enlisted in the RCAF. Dad earned his wings as a pilot and was stationed overseas in England until his return in 1945.
Upon his return dad worked in the machine shop at The McGillivray Mine back in the Crowsnest Pass. In 1955 he began his career in the Canadian Army and made the move to Calgary. In 1958, the family relocated to Lethbridge where mom and dad spent most of the remainder of their lives except for two years in Sherwood Park and a year in Calgary. Each new city generated friendships that lasted a lifetime.
Another career change saw dad leave the Military and join the Department of Indian Affairs. His dedication and devotion to the First Nations people of the Blood Indian Tribe led to his induction as an Honorary Kainai Chieftain, “Chief Heavy Shield”, in 1980.
Dad always enjoyed the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and would spend many hours in a stream fly fishing. He also loved to hunt pheasants and always had his faithful dogs Lady (#1, #2, #3 and #4) at his side.
Dad and Mom never lost their love for the mountains and their passion for the Crowsnest Pass. They always seemed happiest in the solitary shadow of Crowsnest Mountain.
