BERTRAND, Ross Victor
October 10, 1920 – October 10, 2011
Ross Victor Bertrand passed away on his 91st birthday in Abbotsford, BC. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 71 years, Fran, sons Michael (Ricki), Ron (Shelagh), daughters Nancy (Tod) and Shirley (David) Paterson, sister Marilyn Rhodes of Edmonton, and six grandchildren, David, Stuart (Alicia), Andrew, Julie, Emily, and Matthew. Ross was predeceased by one son, William Ross, sister Pauline, and brother Norris (Jean). Ross was born in Calgary, the oldest son of Victor and May Bertrand, and raised on a farm near Milo, Alberta, where he attended a one-room country school for grades one to nine, then Milo High School where he graduated from grade twelve. After taking a business course in Calgary, he joined the Canadian Army in June, 1940. He married Frances Monner, also from the Milo district on 18th August, 1940. He went overseas in 1941 and saw action with the South Saskatchewan Regiment in the liberation of Holland, leaving with the rank of Lieutenant. After his discharge in 1945, he worked for Mac Cosham Storage and then National Revenue in Calgary. He returned to the farm with his growing family in 1951, farming in partnership with his father until 1964. In April 1964 he accepted the position of Agricultural Fieldman in Claresholm, Alberta, and in 1973 he became a Regional Agricultural Officer in Lethbridge, retiring in 1981. Ross was always active in various service clubs, such as the Lions, Kiwanis, and Rotary, and the Royal Canadian Legion, and always willing to help out in the community. He travelled the world with Fran on many tours, visiting Russia, China, Australia, New Zealand, Israel and a numerous countries in Europe. They also attended a number of commemorative army reunions in Holland, and loved exploring the backroads of Albert in their camper van. Ross was a keen golfer and, for many years, an active member of the Country Club in Lethbridge. Ross and Fran moved to Abbotsford in May 2010 to be close to family after living vigorous and independent lives in Lethbridge for almost 40 years, including good memories and many friends from their 16 years in Grandview Village. He died peacefully and we will greatly miss his caring presence, his wild sense of humour, and his constant encouragement and support. Thanks go to the wonderful caregivers at Chilliwack and Abbotsford hospitals, Bevan Lodge, and to the staff and new friends at Hallmark on the Lake.
A memorial will be held November 11 at 2pm at Hallmark on the Lake, 31622 Charlotte Ave., Abbotsford. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favourite charity. Memories and condolences can be sent to www.woodlawnfh-abbotsford.com 604-853-2643.
