BUCHANAN, VERDUN MARJORIE
July 23, 1916 – November 21, 2012
Our dear Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother passed away peacefully at the age of 96 in Pincher Creek with family at her side.
Verdun Clearwater was born into a family of 13 children in Carlea, Saskatchewan. She attended the Holy Family School of Nursing in Prince Albert and began her long nursing career in Vancouver where she met her future husband, Douglas Buchanan.
They were married June 16, 1944, and settled in the Castle River Valley where they established and ran a successful ranching operation while raising a family of five children. Verdun continued to work as an R.N. in Pincher Creek until her retirement at the age of 65. She remained very active in her community as a longtime member of the United Church, the Roaring Lions Club, and as a volunteer in many settings including driving for the “Care Bears”, helping out at the church thrift shop, and assisting with bingo at the seniors lodge. Verdun supported the P.C. Agricultural Society Fair for over 50 years. She was an extraordinary knitter, and her beautiful afghans are treasured by many family members.
Mom also remained very physically active, including enjoying Aquasize until the age of 95. She was an avid gardener, wonderful cook, and generous hostess to the end.
Verdun was predeceased by her husband Douglas and grandsons Daniel and David.
She is survived by her children Gail (Richard) Bernstein, Ron (Karen) Buchanan, Ken (Karen) Buchanan, Lynne (Ray) Kimberley, Debora (Darryll) Crowshoe; grandchildren Michelle, Doug, John, Brandi, Suzanne, RaeLeigh, Ian, Stephanie, and Stephen; and great- grandchildren Julia, Hudson, Owen, and William.
Mom had a life well lived and well loved.
A memorial service will be held at two o’clock in the afternoon, Tuesday, November 27th at the Pincher Creek United Church.
If desired, donations can be made in Verdun’s name to the Care Bears: PO Box 1713, Pincher Creek, Alberta, T0K 1W0; or to the charity of your choice.

Hilda Oddan
1925 - 2012
Hilda Oddan, beloved wife of the late Raymond Oddan, passed away in Taber
on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at the age 87 years.

Avenue, Taber on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Carl
Bogda officiating. Burial to follow at the Taber Memorial Garden.
Condolences may be forwarded by visiting our website at
www.southlandfuneral.com.
Hilda is survived by her daughter Linda Oddan of Taber, son Larry Oddan
(Elaine Friesen) of Coaldale and his children Charlyn, James and Jessica,
son Les (Karen) Oddan of Taber and their children Dylan and Kaitlyn. She is
also survived by her sister-in-law Elsie Oddan; brothers-in-law Edward
(Theresa) Oddan and Leonard (Loretta) Oddan as well as numerous nieces,
nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband Raymond; parents Adolph & Sophia Roth;
father and mother-in-law Engeman & Julia Oddan; brothers Raymond, Rudolph
and Jake Roth; sisters Elizabeth Roth and Minnie Heller; brothers-in-law
Ernest, Orval and Lawrence Oddan; sister-in-law Doreen Oddan.
Hilda was born to Adolph and Sophia Roth on May 22, 1925 on the family
homestead south of Fox Valley, Saskatchewan. As she was one of six children,
she learned the typical farm skills that it took to live on the Saskatchewan
prairies. She was raised and educated there, eventually taking on jobs off
the farm in the slower times. She moved to Maple Creek, Saskatchewan where
she met Raymond Oddan while working as a waitress in the BC cafe. Upon their
meeting, Raymond quickly became a frequent customer. The relationship
blossomed and the two were married on January 19, 1954, the coldest day of
the year. Together they built a house which they lived in for two years. In
1956 they moved to Hays where they started their family and united their
mixed farming skills on new land. They continued to live at Hays until 1967
when they moved to Taber. Life was very busy running two places and after
many years they decided to slow down. During this alleged retirement, life
took a dramatic turn in 1999 when Hilda lost Ray, her partner of forty five
years. She moved to a seniors living home in 2004 where she resided for a
number of years until moving into the Extendicare in Lethbridge. She
eventually moved back to Taber, living at Linden View, which allowed her to
be closer to family. More recently she was a resident at the Extended Care
in Taber, where she resided until the time of her passing. She will be
greatly missed, but as she always said, “Don’t say good-bye, just say so
long”.
