STEVENSON, Alice L. (Sparky)
October 8, 1920 - May 10, 2012
It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of our mother at the age of 91 yrs in Magrath AB. She was born in Kindersley Saskatchewan, the second child of four, to Fraser Knox & Mary Jane Carmichael. As a child she moved with her family many times, eventually settling on Vancouver Island near Royston/Cumberland/Union Bay and then on to Victoria. At the age of 7 she contracted Polio and the physicians at the time stated that she would never walk again. Her mother was a nurse and through her persistent efforts, Alice went on to not only walk, but to become an excellent Scottish Highland dancer and tennis player. During WWII she worked for Boeing Aircraft as a riveter, assembling airplanes. She met Lewis Stevenson at that time and they married in 1946 and made their home in Magrath AB where she lived until her passing. She loved the town of Magrath and never wanted to live anywhere else. She was known for her community spirit and willingness to give a hand. But, she will always be remembered best as "Sparky", the lady who taught the kids of Magrath how to play tennis and to Highland dance. She will also be remembered for her annual Scottish Ceilidh celebrations, where, for eighteen years, she proudly showcased her student’s talents. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and held many positions there from dance instructor to primary teacher.
She is survived by a sister, Elsie Martin in Victoria and brother, John "Sandy" Carmichael in Edmonton, 2 children, Marsha Haddock (Ed) of Gainesville Florida and Mike Stevenson (Linda) of Calgary, 7 grandchildren; Jim, Steve, Greg and Dan Haddock; Loreen, Jeff and Matt Stevenson, plus 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Lewis in 1986; a sister, Elma Olsen in 1994 and a great grandson, Evan Haddock, in 2007.
Friends may meet the family from 12:00 to 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints GARDEN PLACE CHAPEL, Magrath, with the Funeral Service to follow at 1:00 p.m. Interment in the Magrath Cemetery.
If friends so desire, please make donations in Alice’s name, to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta.

WITBECK
MARY LAVINA WITBECK, adored wife of Brownie (Owen) Witbeck left her earthly body on May 10, 2012. Born February 15, 1923 to Luella and Alex Crawford, she went to live with her other parents Art and Laura Atwood at the age of three after the death of her mother. Lavina was the proud mother of Jim (Penny) Hatfield, Randy (Leslie) Hatfield, Sharon (David) Nicholson, Susan Kinney, Bruce Hatfield, Jessie (Syd Ives) Witbeck, Phillip (Sharon) Hatfield, Michael Hatfield, Dawn (Richard) Teerlink and a whole grist of grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
A faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, she served in many positions but her favorite was teaching the little children. She was a tireless worker who could be counted on to get the job done. Her grandchildren were her delight and if she wasn’t yanking out their baby teeth she could probably be found hiding in the bushes in her gorilla suit waiting to scare the wits out of them. Family gatherings were the highlight of her life and she was never happier than when she was making preparations for the many get- togethers.
She will be greatly missed by her sister Gwen George, her brother Earl Crawford and the countless nieces and nephews who considered her their favorite Aunt.
Friends may meet the family from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, KNIGHT STREET CHAPEL, Raymond, with the Funeral Service to follow at 2:00 p.m. Bishop Jim Steed will be
officiating. Interment in the Temple Hill Cemetery, Raymond.
