GRUMMETT
LORNE NELSON GRUMMETT of Lethbridge, beloved husband of the late Margaret "Meta", passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Lethbridge Legacy Lodge on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at the age of 83 years.
Lorne was born in Calgary on May 10, 1928 to Nelson and Mabel Grummett. He stayed in the Calgary area and it is here that he met the love of his life Meta. There’s was a love like no others and it was this bond that led them down the aisle in Calgary, in 1949. They had a fulfilled life, celebrating many holidays together with their sons Lorne and Don. Margaret was quite the decorator when it came to holidays and she often got the family in the spirit of the season with her enthusiasm and joy. Their favourite holidays were Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day. This was truly the day where Lorne got into the holiday spirit, with his green beer in hand, enjoying this Irish tradition.
Lorne, Meta and their sons lived in the Calgary and Red Deer area for all of their married life and it was where they were all truly home. Meta lost her battle with cancer at the age of 66, on March 9, 1996 after many wonderful years of marriage and it is fair to say, that a piece of Lorne’s heart went with her.
After Meta’s passing, Lorne lived in Red Deer near his son Lorne, Bonnie, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was known to many as a great friend. Often offering to drive other members of the lodge he lived in to their numerous appointments and often embarking on day tours to the surrounding wilderness sites. He was always busy and loved being with friends. He enjoyed many hobbies, lawn bowling, bowling, camping, fishing and spending time with those he loved. On July 29, 2010, Lorne moved to The View in Lethbridge to be closer to Don, Mary Ann, his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. He enjoyed watching the trains drive by, and the beautiful scenery from his window. He stayed there until December 2010, when a room became available at the Lethbridge Legacy Lodge. It was here that he developed an incredible bond with those caregivers and staff, and it was truly a wonderful place to live out the remainder of his days.
Lorne will be missed by many people, he was truly a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
Lorne is survived by his oldest son Lorne (Bonnie) Grummett of Red Deer; grandchildren Chad (Karrie) Grummett of Calgary, Lindsay (Jason) Miller of Red Deer; great-grandchildren Cale and Sarah Grummett and Ethan and Dylan Miller.
His youngest son Don (Mary Ann) Grummett of Lethbridge; grandchildren Carrie-Ann (Kevin) Perry of Coaldale, Jennipher Martin of Lethbridge; great-grandchildren Kimberlee and Alyssa Perry and Nicholas and Nolan Martin.
Lorne is also survived by his younger brother Garry (Ann) Grummett of Sherwood Park; nieces and nephews Kim (Karen) Grummett and their children Ashlyn, Jordan and Julia of Sherwood Park, Tammy (Blake) Thorarinson and their children Brittany and Natalie of Edmonton; cousins Lorne and Aron Grummett of California as well as Marion Grummett and Bryan (Erin) Grummett of Montana.
Besides his loving wife Meta, Lorne was predeceased by his parents Nelson and Mabel Grummett.
Lorne’s family would like to express their sincerest gratitude towards the nurses, caregivers and support staff at the care homes that Lorne stayed at in Red Deer and Lethbridge. Most recent however; was the Legacy Lodge who made this past year immensely comfortable, your care for Lorne and your compassion for our family during his stay there made him happy to call Legacy home. Thank-you.
A Private Family Memorial Celebration in Lorne’s honor will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place.
For those who wish, Memorial Donations may be made to the Legacy Lodge Recreation Department, 335 Lettice Perry Road North, Lethbridge, AB, T1H 5V7.
