Dr. Alexander Maitland Harper (Alex)
March 10, 1926 – July 24, 2012
The community of Lethbridge has lost a prominent citizen and intellectual. Dr. Alex Harper was a son, brother, loving husband, fabulous father, grandfather and great-grandfather. With his PhD in Entomology, he was a research scientist studying insect pests of field crops with Agriculture Canada for 40 years.
He leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Georgean (nee Hirst) and his four children: son Dr. Brad Harper and his son Brin; daughter Shawna (Dr. Mark) Trebble, and their children Dan (Lyndsay), Stephen, and Shannon; daughter Paula Harper (Daryl Collison), and their children Frances, Ben, and Erin; and daughter Dr. Liana Harper (Dr. Pierre Gaulin), and their children Alexi and Mathieu. He also leaves one brother, Dr. Alfred (Naila) Harper, and their children Shareen (Robert) Kruse, and Wendy Meyers, and three children. Alex Harper was predeceased by his father and mother and his younger brother, Dr. Frank Harper and wife, Alice.
Alex had a strong sense of justice and concern for the underprivileged. He was a longtime member of Kiwanis, and was a Senator and on the Board of Governors for the University of Lethbridge. He enjoyed good food, good friends and a good discussion! He had a passion for the outdoors and was happy showing his children where ladybird beetles over-winter, taking his family skiing, hiking, camping, and travelling. The family has lost a kind and gentle man, and greatly loved patriarch.
The family would like to thank ALL staff of Unit 3C at Chinook Regional Hospital who helped care for Alex. Their smiles and compassionate caring were invaluable support.
A Celebration of Alex’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, July 29th, 2012 Martin Brothers RIVERVIEW Chapel, 610 – 4th Street South, Lethbridge, with Valerie Martell-Kostiuk officiating.

In 1942 the family moved to Glenwood, Alberta and later Picture Butte where they farmed, growing sugar beets, potatoes and vegetables. When her husband passed away, Fujiye moved to Lethbridge and she maintained a garden that expanded to fill most of a large backyard and supplied many family members with fresh produce. She also grew a vast array of beautiful cutting flowers that she took faithfully to the cemetery all summer long to the graves of family and friends. Fujiye had experienced periods of great hardship in her life but she was a devout Buddhist and held a deep appreciation for all that she had. She taught her family to experience that same gratitude and express it through hard work and caring for others. She was a warm, loving person with a ready smile and a peaceful nature. At the end of her life, she was well loved and cared for by her children, selflessly, as she had cared for them.
