CHRISTENSEN
MELVA NEILSON CHRISTENSEN of Magrath, Alberta passed away peacefully on January 1, 2013 at the Raymond Hospital, at the age of 93.
Melva was born in Magrath, Alberta to Earl Neilson and Geneva Passey Neilson on April 22, 1919. She was married to her beloved husband Norman Beck Christensen on March 23, 1940, and they spent the next 61 years together. During that time, they ran the town blacksmith shop and farmed west of town. After finishing her schooling in Magrath, Melva worked at various jobs, including one at Denny’s Own Ice Cream Parlor. While Norman’s love of ice cream first brought him to Denny’s, he kept coming back because of the girl behind the counter that he had fallen in love with. After their marriage Melva spent time raising her family, cooking and baking delicious food, making beautiful quilts and driving the school bus. Of her many talents, she was most proud of her garden and the joy her exquisite flower arrangements brought to her family and the countless friends she shared them with.
Melva is survived by her daughter Joan (Barrie) Steed and her son Kim (Joy) Christensen and brothers Blaine Neilson and Kay (Shirley) Neilson. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Norman Christensen, parents Earl and Geneva Neilson, sister Pearldene and brothers Merlin, Kenneth and Robert.
The Funeral Service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Garden Place Chapel (170 N Center Street), Magrath, AB on Saturday, January 5th, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.

COUTTS
MR. GEORGE COUTTS passed away in Lethbridge on Monday, December 31, 2012 at the age of 94 years.
George was born on August 26, 1918 in the town of Wishaw, District of Cambusnethan, County of Lanark, Scotland. George emigrated to Canada with his mother Christina and five of his siblings in 1921. His father James Douglas Coutts had emigrated to Lethbridge a year earlier and sent funds for their passage.
After attending schools in Lethbridge he apprenticed as an electrician receiving his journeyman’s just after the outbreak of World War II. George enlisted in the armed services on September 22, 1941 and was discharged from the 39th Field Battery on February 12, 1946, after active service in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe at the rank of Battery Sergeant Major.
Upon return he married Verna (Snowden) in 1946, established a home in Lethbridge, became an electrician, and operated an electrical contracting business with a partner for many years before taking employment as electrician for the City of Lethbridge Power Plant and later with the Department of Transport as the chief electrician for the Lethbridge Airport, from which he retired in 1983.
Golf was George’s passion and following his retirement he spent many years on the golf links and was one of the original shareholders of the Henderson Lake Golf Club in 1961. George scored a hole-in-one in 1991 at the Henderson Lake Golf Club and his Hole-in-One Certificate from Molson’s was a fond memory. In recent years George’s many golfing buddies were instrumental in getting him out onto the course, correcting his score-card, and in keeping him on time for their weekly Friday breakfast meetings. Over the years George was a member of the Kiwanis and Elks Clubs, and the Canadian Legion.
George was predeceased by his loving wife of 42 years Verna Coutts on July 18, 1988. From a family of five sisters (Allison, Evelyn, Christina, Margaret, and Jemima) and one brother (William), his sister Evelyn Chenery of Victoria, BC survives.
George is survived by his two sons Terry (Maureen) Coutts of White Rock, BC and Brian (Karen) Coutts of Bowling Green, Kentucky; granddaughters Heather and Megan; long-time companion Joyce Long; and by his many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
Family and friends are invited to attend a public graveside service on March 16, 2013 at the Mountain View Cemetery. Further details will be announced closer to the service date.

Forest Nephi Sherwood:
August 3rd, 1920 – December 30th, 2012
Forest Nephi Sherwood died peacefully at the University Hospital in Edmonton on December 30th. He was in good health, enjoying his time with family right up until his passing through to the other side. Forest grew up in Glenwood and Lethbridge. After the war he graduated from the University of Alberta in agriculture, returning to Lethbridge to work in irrigation. The family then moved to Calgary, where in the early 1960s he established Evergreen Irrigation, currently being succeeded by third generation family members. Forest continued to work until he was 75. Family was Forest’s reason to be. He was interested in everyone and everything. The first word used to describe him was "charming", backed up by intelligence and integrity. He was a "gentle" gentleman to the core. He will be greatly missed.
Forest is survived by his four children – Sandra Dronyk, Valerie Kennedy, Trisha (Cliff) Spencer, and Tim (Donna); brothers; Dale (Lucy) and Darryl (Lynn), and sister-in-law Holly, fourteen grandchildren and spouses, thirteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. GNANDT
The family of Frank Gnandt Sr. wish to announce, with great sadness, his passing at St. Michael's Palliative Care Center on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at the age of 83 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Elfriede; his son, daughter-in-law and family, Frank R. and Melody Gnandt (grandsons, Michael and Kevin); and his son Edwin E. and daughter-in-law Janelle Gnandt (grandsons, Jacob and Andre), his sisters, Anna Oesterle and Klara Mirk (Tom), and his half brothers Ron (Heather) of Oshawa, of Ontario, and Eric Gnandt (Doris) of Whiterock, B.C.
Frank was born in Hungary in 1929. His childhood was filled with struggles. He lost his mother at the age of 8, and experienced the turbulence of the inter-war years. He spent time in Hungary, Romania, Czechoslovakia, and settled in Germany, where he struggled each day to survive with his sisters and his father.
After the war, Frank moved to Limnau, Germany, where he met Elfriede, the love of his life. They soon married and moved to Raymond, Alberta; working for a local farmer, Balint Timko, in the sugar beet fields.
Life was hard for the newlywed couple but they eventually scraped out a living and moved to Lethbridge. Frank became a miller at Ellison Milling and remained in their employ for the rest of his career.
It was his family that brought Frank the most meaning and deepest joy. He was devoted to his wife, Elfriede. They shared everything together and truly were one, as a loving couple! They loved to dance and sing and be with friends. They demonstrated a loving relationship that was worthy of a romantic novel. They loved to travel each year to Hawaii and mingle with long standing friends at the German Canadian Club.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His quick wit remained until his last days. "Opa" will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by many.

Edmonton in 1963. Over the next five years he participated in various
community association sponsored activities such as hockey, bowling and Boy
Scouts. In 1967 the family moved to Lethbridge where he continued to be

tier above their age group in the Midget Spud League. In 1973 the family
moved to Medicine Hat where Dale attended Medicine Hat High. During his high
school years he played for the Medicine Hat High Mohawks football team.
After graduation Dale was hired by AGT in Lethbridge where he worked for a

was always concerned about Linda and made sure she had a hot meal, enough
rest and he helped out at the flower shop. He was an amazing mentor to his
step children. Papa Dale had a special bond with his nine grandkids, whether
it be cutting branches out of the large tree, having fires, digging in the
garden or just giving advice about boys. Nestor was a best friend to many

everything, whether you wanted to hear it or not. We will all miss his life
