LETHBRIDGE HERALD
Lethbridge regional police are investigating excessive force allegations against Whitehorse RCMP. Members of the local municipal police were called in as an independent police service to investigate a complaint stemming from the arrest of a 57-year-old Whitehorse woman.
The woman complained that an officer at the Yukon detachment used excessive force while arresting her Jan. 31, when police identified her as a suspect in a downtown Whitehorse assault. Police put handcuffs on the woman and drove her back to the Whitehorse Correctional Centre, where they noticed an injury on her arm and took her to the hospital. The woman later complained that the injury had been caused by police. No charges have been laid in connection to the assault for which she was arrested.
Two officers from the Lethbridge regional police flew to Whitehorse Tuesday to start the investigation. When they are finished, the Public Prosecution Service of Canada will also conduct an independent review and then it's up to the RCMP to determine whether to internally investigate the officer in question, who is still on active duty.
