Amnesty International Lethbridge and the Lethbridge Public Library will show a screening of Al Jazeera's "Bahrain: Shouting in the Dark," Wednesday in the library's main theatre gallery.
The Qatar Media Corporation's film follows the revolutions of the small island kingdom of Bahrain in the Arabian Gulf where people fighting for democratic rights broke the barriers of fear, only to find themselves alone and crushed.
The Middle East is a region where countless numbers of men and women are working to strengthen and promote human rights. However, abuses have grown worse since the Arab Spring demonstrations began in Dec. 2010.
Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion and a question period. Panellists include Dr. Trevor Harrison, the chairman of the sociology department at the University of Lethbridge; Thabit Alomari, a graduate student in the anthropology department who has studied and lived in the Middle East; and Don Wright, the regional development co-ordinator for Amnesty International Canada.
The event begins at 7 p.m., and free refreshments will be provided.
