Letter to the Editor
In Roasts and Toasts this week someone toasted the work of Mike Spencer and Geomatic Attic. I think the toast needs some follow-up.
The high calibre of performers that Geomatic Attic have hosted is well known and loved but what is less well known is the philanthropic nature of many of the shows. This month, Geomatic Attic will host their third annual fundraiser for Womanspace. When Mike first approached us with the idea of a concert to benefit Womanspace, we had lost almost all our funding and had laid off all the staff. We were unsure of our future. The boost that the Jill Barber concert gave us was immeasurable. Not only did it allow us to pay rent for a number of months but it gave us the energy to continue.
Three years after that first concert, Womanspace Resource Centre is here to stay. We have enjoyed strong community support and secured numerous grants to continue providing support to low-income women in southern Alberta. While Geomatic Attic was not the sole reason for that recovery, I can honestly say that they were an essential part of the recovery. We thank everyone at Geomatic Attic, especially Mike Spencer, and look forward to seeing our many supporters at the Feb. 26 concert with Sarah Slean.
