Letter to the Editor
I read the article by Caroline Zentner regarding student debt that ran in the Nov. 19 issue of the Lethbridge Herald.
My daughter is one of the many recent University of Lethbridge grads, having graduated in June of this year with a Bachelor of Education degree, who is facing a mountain of student loan debt. About $60,000 worth! She is only 23. To make matters worse, she is unable to get a job as a teacher. Cutbacks, you know.
What a life we have given our children. We encourage them to go to university or college to get a better education so that hopefully when they are done, they have opportunities for a career that pays better than working in retail or fast food. But in doing so, we saddle these young people with an overwhelming debt that we as mature adults wouldn't even consider taking on given this economy.
Thank you for this article. Hopefully our political leaders both provincially and federally will have a look at our education system and how we might better serve these young adults that will one day be running our country.
