Questioning of integrity won't be tolerated

Print PDF

In the Dec. 12 Lethbridge Herald, Mr. Chris Spearman's letter to the editor completely ignores the fact that the central issue of my letter that he refers to was with his earlier letter where he stated that council was "unethical" (his words) in making the decision they did regarding council pay. He repeated the word "unethical" on TV as well. My letter simply pointed out that the comment was defamatory and that the Lethbridge Herald needs to take some responsibility when consenting to print letters that impugn anyone's integrity.
The beginning of my earlier letter agreed with the premise that everyone is entitled to their opinion but, I reiterate, the point of my letter was that, in giving that opinion, defamatory comments are inappropriate. I am very tolerant of the opinions of others . . . I don't respond to the letters to the editor from the armchair quarterbacks who constantly mangle the facts when they criticize council decisions. Nor do I respond to the silly Roasts that are an embarrassment to our community. But what I am not prepared to endure is to have my integrity (or that of my colleagues on council) questioned in such a cavalier manner.
