City council pay hikes should be tied to performance

Print PDF

Mayor Dodic and some councillors are fond of comparing their remuneration to those of other Alberta cities when they feel a need for a pay raise, i.e. we're falling behind others so it is time for a pay hike.
I have a novel idea. Why not tie pay increases to performance? How many of those council members oversaw upwards of eight-per-cent tax increases since 2000; how many oversaw $30 million of taxpayers' money "invested" and rendered unusable for seven years at best, or outright lost forever; how many have lost close to $1 million after purchasing the 1 Avenue South property and sitting on it for 10 years? The list goes on.
Yes, I think I'd like to see pay increases tied to performance. I hope I didn't hurt the mayor's feelings.
