City council pay hikes should be tied to performance

I have a novel idea. Why not tie pay increases to performance? How many of those council members oversaw upwards of eight-per-cent tax increases since 2000; how many oversaw $30 million of taxpayers' money "invested" and rendered unusable for seven years at best, or outright lost forever; how many have lost close to $1 million after purchasing the 1 Avenue South property and sitting on it for 10 years? The list goes on.

Condoms do provide effective protection against HIV

I write in response to Geoffrey Capp's letter of Dec. 1, in which he takes issue with the promotion by Dr. Valerie Delpech of Britain's Health Protection Agency of "safe sex" to prevent the transmission of HIV. Mr. Capp believes there is insufficient evidence to support condom effectiveness in the fight against HIV.

Project threatens peace and quiet of U of L library

In response to the article regarding the Library Learning Commons Project at the University of Lethbridge: I am a fifth-year music student at the U of L, and I take my education very seriously. I state as earnestly as I possibly can, this project is a mistake.

Anti-abortion mail-out contemptible

On Nov. 19 I emailed my concern and disgust at a recent anti-abortion (pro-life) card that was delivered to my door. (Anonymously, of course!) Whatever your views on abortion are, this overly aggressive mail-out is in my opinion contemptible.

Petty politics trumps doing the right thing

The Herald missed this story last week, but it's important for people to know about it. One typical headline in another news outlet read, "Tories block bid to make cheaper medicines for poor nations" (Globe and Mail). The background is that Bill C-398 came up for a vote in the House last week.

Anti-abortion flyers crossed the line of good taste

Aggressive effort violates fundamental right of women

A graphic postcard was inserted in my house doorknob with the caption, "killed by a doctor," from the anti-abortion campaign on Nov. 24. By doing this, they have shown their desperation to use any means possible. Symbolically, this is akin to shoving an agenda to my private abode.

Israel not the bad guy in Mideast conflict

I would like to comment on Kaljo Pohjakas's letter on Nov. 12, where he accuses Israel of war mongering. Interesting that on Nov. 12, the anniversary of Kristallnacht was recognized: the start of the Holocaust. I guess Israel should wait for Holocaust No.

We need heroes to fight to rights of the pre-born

In October 1929 a group of Canadian women (now known as the "Famous Five") successfully pressured Canada's highest court to grant "person" status to women. The result of this legal distinction freed women from being the property of their father or husband, and gave them the same rights and opportunities as men.

City shouldn't rush into smart meter technology

The city of Lethbridge Electrical Department is currently installing what is known as wireless smart meters, replacing the old analog electricity metering system. Wireless smart meters typically produce atypical, relatively potent and very short-pulsed radio frequency/microwaves whose biological effects have never been fully tested.
