Letters to the Editor

Images a logical part of pro-life message

Recently, letters to the editor have expressed objections to an educational campaign by a local pro-life group, which I am part of. >First, please note that children are not our target audience, but it is unavoidable that sometimes children might see the images.

Bishop the new 'Grinch Who Stole Christmas'?

Just because the Alberta Court of Appeal rules that Bishop Henry has the power, the right, to take the buildings away from the Catholic Charities Clothes Bank of Lethbridge, it doesn't mean that it is "right" for Bishop Henry to use his power in this way.

Public has part to play in controlling pet population

If you look at the Pets Page section "Looking for a Home" on Saturdays you will see that there are a number of cats and dogs that need homes. Many former animal companions have been abandoned on rural roads, alleys, or left behind when their "owners" move.

Coming changes will hurt veterans

In December 2013, two key segments of the Veterans Independence Program (assists vets to continue living in their homes) will be privatized to Blue Cross by Veterans Affairs. After December 2013, bi-annual payments will be made to vets receiving housekeeping and ground maintenance.

Like us, a fetus has human rights, too

My stance on the controversial abortion issue is not based on religion or any other ideology; it is founded on an understanding and acknowledgement of medical sciences, law, ethics and morality. The pro-choice stand, that pregnant women have the right to do anything to their bodies, is scientifically, ethically and logically false.

Scotland has influence beyond its small size

Scotland's relationship to its southern neighbour, where Canadian-born journalist Dyer has taken up residence, is not unlike that between Canada and the United States - benign neglect that has not always been so benign.

MP's column didn't represent all his constituents

We are troubled by MP Jim Hillyer's "From the Hill" column in the Friday, Dec. 7 Lethbridge Herald. The column began with promise: "We believe this freedom to worship or not to worship as one sees fit, as fundamental." Unfortunately, it devolves into argument, abuse of fact, and proselytizing.

Citizens need to stand up against Tory efforts

We need to realize the many and wide-ranging implications of the Omnibus bill and trade negotiations. Aboriginals have obviously got it (check The Herald of Dec. 14 reporting on the rally of hundreds on Dec. 13 at and around Galt Gardens).

How can you talk to close-minded people?

I had a interesting morning today. To start the story, I have "anarchy" tattooed on one side of my neck. Having this tattoo, I am aware of the potential conversations that may arise. So, my wife and I were standing in line for a coffee and this older fellow asked about my tattoo, wondering if I condone people being able to shoot and kill others.

What effective opposition looks like

The Wildrose Official Opposition led the way in the Legislature on debating bills and proposing positive changes to government legislation. While the PC government ran a $3 billion deficit, Wildrose voiced Albertans' concerns with 61 per cent of debate time, compared to only 16 per cent for PC, 10 per cent for Liberal and 13 per cent for NDP.
