Letters to the Editor

Audacious request at a time of family's mourning

I want to start this letter off by addressing how truly disgusted I am with certain individuals in the city of Lethbridge. I work in the oilsands and my heart was broken to receive the call on March 13 that my dear sweet great-granddad had passed away in his sleep.

City taxpayers will pay less than one per cent of CASA cost

In response to negative comments and anonymous "roasts" directed to the new CASA downtown community arts centre, poised to open this spring, I encourage detractors to visit the following City of Lethbridge link for detailed and accurate information regarding the actual amount of municipal tax dollars that have been spent on this project: http://www.

Straight answers hard to find on province's royalty rate

The results we have obtained from our provincial government leaders, and from the other opposition political leaders, in the last few months is quite astounding! These taped speeches have been taken at the SACPA meetings and at other venues in Lethbridge, at announced public meetings.

Agreement with teachers isn't a done deal yet

With regard to The Herald editorial of March 19 (which did provide some clear insight into key areas of the discussions), and for that matter, to other news sources that have covered the Alberta government's offer to the Alberta Teachers Association: it is premature and erroneous reporting to state that a deal has been reached.

This letter is in reply to the letter written by Mark Benson representing his anti-fluoride group and appearing on March 14. His letter is just a bunch of total nonsense. I can stand reading this garbage no more. He talks about facts. OK.

Return to graduated provincial tax is best solution

The premier's solution seems to be cutbacks not yet specified, but would inevitably mean cutbacks in services. This was Premier Klein's solution which resulted in health-care premiums (not a tax?) and an infrastructure deficit equal to the original financial deficit.

An easy way to protest GMO products

I tuned into Brier curling on opening day (March 2), and observed Monsanto is a prominent sponsor. I revile Monsanto, and hope that many more would feel a similar revulsion toward their practices. Despite my enjoyment of the Brier, I made an effort to revisit a way of protest that should prove agreeable and amenable to the lazy and busy alike.

Can we keep increasing emissions?

Our family has been driving a Honda Civic Wagon (1.5 L; 4 cylinder gasoline engine) since its purchase in 1989. On Feb. 18, we reached the 380,000-kilometre mark which is the average distance from the surface of Earth to the moon. If we assume that one-third of the driving was on highways, then we used 8,300 litres (6.
