$80 for $30.08 of electricity?

Print PDF

I can't understand why there is not a consumer revolt going on in Lethbridge over the ridiculous charges we're paying for gas and electricity?
My most recent Enmax bill, which was quite usual, shows that I consumed $30.08 worth of electricity. Total charge? $80. The story on gas is even worse: actual gas consumed $25.34. Charged? $82.33!
What the heck am I paying an "Interim Shortfall Rider" for? A storage rider? A deferral account rider? A service charge rider? Oh, and let's not forget the "Municipal Franchise Fee" of $10.60. Who has the City franchised to, or from? Does anyone understand where all this money is going?
Bridget Pastoor, in a recent letter to you, noted that when her electricity was cut off unexpectedly, she had to deal with three companies she'd never heard of to get it turned back on. One starts to suspect the kind of financial shenanigans that let Enron take $8 billion from the consumers of California, before disappearing in the bankruptcy courts in one of the biggest corporate frauds in history. Are we suffering from something similar?
