LETHBRIDGE FIRES

Thousands of acres of farmland and prairie south of Magrath, Raymond and Warner, were burned by fire Sunday night, but area officials say it was a miracle no one was hurt or homes destroyed. Lethbridge Conservative MP Jim Hillyer and Warner County Reeve Ross Ford surveyed damage Monday across the south, and credit countless numbers of fire fighters, farmers and other volunteers for battling the wind-driven blaze, which narrowly missed homes and other buildings in its path. The fire was finally contained about 3 a.m., although emergency personnel remained in the area during the day checking on hotspots and watching for flareups.

Officials with the County of Lethbridge, meanwhile, lifted evacuation orders for Mountain Meadows, Sunset Acres and the surrounding area Monday morning but we're asking residents to stay at least 10 metres for any downed power poles and lines.

"It is critical that residents keep a safe distance from these downed lines," said Darryl Beaton, Emergency Service Coordinator for the County of Lethbridge.

If residents have any concerns they are to contact Fortis at 310-WIRE.

The County suggests residents returning home begin documenting and photographing any damages and to contact their insurance companies immediately.

"We are fortunate that this emergency was handled in a timely manner," said Lorne Hickey, Reeve of the County of Lethbridge. "We want to thank our police and fire crewsfor their hard work and dedication and the community for their patience and understanding."

The cause of the fires is under investigation.
