LETHBRIDGE HERALD
A Blood Tribe man survived an attack with a fence post in October, but his dog wasn't so lucky.
During a hearing Thursday in Lethbridge provincial court Crown prosecutor Dave Labrenz described the horrific circumstances in which a drunken Shelby Mountain Horse went to the home of her victim, grabbed his puppy and threw it in the air. After it landed, she grabbed it again and smashed its head into the ground until it died.
When the puppy's owner went to pick it up, the accused hit him in the face with a picket fence post, which broke under the impact.
Labrenz pointed out there were nails sticking out of the fence post, and it was lucky the attack didn't result in the man's death. He also pointed out society has little sympathy for anyone who kills a defenseless animal, and will not tolerate such a "despicable" act.
Mountain Horse pleaded guilty to one charge each of assault with a weapon, killing an animal, failing to comply with court-ordered conditions, and failure to appear in court, and was sentenced to 90 days in jail. She is also prohibited from possessing certain firearms and weapons for 10 years and others for life, and she must submit a sample of her DNA for the National DNA Databank.
