Lethbridge regional police is investigating the discovery of human remains found in Indian Battle Park early Monday morning.
A citizen walking on the south side of the coulees down the 3 Avenue South hill into the park saw wildlife activity and subsequently discovered the remains of a man. The remains were not visible from the road, but located away from the path in an area covered with thick brush.
Police said the cause of the man's death is unknown but foul play is not suspected. Police also stated that the remains have been "tentatively identified" and will be taken to the Calgary medical examiner's office for an autopsy.
The major crimes section is investigating the matter. A search of the area with a cadaver-trained dog from the Canadian Search Dog Association was completed Monday afternoon.
"They've completed their search of the area and gathered whatever details they have from the scene, and now the background investigation will begin into what is known about the individual believed to be involved," said Staff Sgt. Scott Chadsey.
According to police the discovery was consistent with a person sleeping or living in the coulees. However, Chadsey said police have not determined whether or not the man was homeless.
"We don't know that for sure, but that's the preliminary deductions that are being drawn by the major crimes investigators at the scene," he said. "The reality of the situation is they don't know who they have, they have a suspicion of who they have, but whether or not (the man) is a homeless person or it's a person who's been sleeping in the coulees or not, I just don't know the total details."
Chadsey said police would likely "have significantly more information to give" later today.
"One of the reasons I know that (investigators) are pensive about giving details out is that they're trying to do their best to maintain the dignity and respect of the fact that a family has lost a loved one. They're just trying to ensure that the family is notified in the proper manner."
