Never said education shouldn't be left to the pros. What I DID say is that parents should make SURE they get it. Too many send their kids off to school and blindly trust that they're getting what they need. But...this whole thread has gone sideways in IMHO-My first comment on this thread was pretty much how I used to talk to my peers when I was a teen. I joined the military in my late teens and learned Barrack Room language. That lasted until I got married and used it at home ... well lets just say I started using a more appropriate lingo. When I was a teen old foggies thought my long hair, rock and roll and blue jeans was just sooo wrong. Now WE are the old foggies looking at young kids and saying they're just SOOO wrong. As to texting & spelling-No texting won't deplete my knowledge. But young kids don't have my knowledge of spelling. They're just learning and guess what they're learning - BTW I'm ROTFL. So BRB. TTFN.

personally I found the letter rather picky. We might all be surprised at the written language skills of these students. they are just speaking in the lingo of their generation to each other. As for phonics, we all learn in different ways and the Alberta education website indicates this. I would think phonics would be better for reading than for spelling. I did not learn by phonics and I can spell quite well-I can not however, type so well.

You don't think education, i.e. school, has any repsonsibility in what your child learns? Do you homeschool? Yes, parents should be totally involved and concerned about their childs progress but education is best left to professionals. And if concerns arise, then the system itself can be questioned. Not teaching phonics is a great example.

Because the letter was directed at the language skills of students...which leads to a discussion of the education...spelling and grammer...the "valley girls" expressions of like, you know etc....the method now used of learning to read/spell by memorizing has lead to the the misspelling so prevalent today. In my 60s, I learned by phonics therefore I can spell because I learned the basics. I can also pronounce an unfamiliar word because of the same basics. And, yes, we learned all the cute ryhmes too, which still come in handy when memory fails..lol

well to me honor sounds right and honour does not -- and I do know what phonics is thank-you very much. However I (an old fogie) was taught to, spell by memorizing and then there were little tricks we learned. One was the i before e rhyme. We had spelling tests twice a week. I don't remember my children (now also in their 30's and 40's) having spelling tests like I did. They also did not learn grammar the way we did when I was in school in BC. Perhaps lack of emphasis on these skills is the problem, not phonics. And really what has it all got to do with the gist of this letter?

phonics is a method to teach spelling/reading skills, to learn how to properly spell, read by "sounding out the word". the diff between U.S>, British etc, is not about phonics. thus differences..honor, honour etc.

tsk, tsk..........these messages are not really as long as one would like, therefore, not as polished as expected. Depends what school taught phonics. I didn't make this up, it's a fact. It stopped when my son, now in his 40s was in 3rd grade..in a local town. So be annoyed. Assume what you like. I DID NOT say everyone over 40 can spell!! I SAID that 40 and under have clearly demonstrated, even on University entrance tests to be bordering iliterate. Believe it or not.Students these days spell as the word sounds, no silent letters e.g. ph etc. Do I make myself clear for you? People that automatically judge and insult annoy me!
