An air of trying to impress? It's all basic English! Perhaps, they should rephrase for the common folks you want to get it. "It ain't a good idear to tell the good folks in dis here town what they should believe - 'specially if you're a politician... and, by the way, this ain't no dominion in, like, the sense of a religion. We just have a stupid queen." There... is that better?

'"Religion should not only be tolerated, it should be encouraged." We disagree: a government that directly encourages religion must favour some religious views over others.' If some religions are not discouraged don't we end up with terrorists?

Without wishing to persist any further and only to correct the above misinterpretati on of my views: 1. While the authors have the right to use any style of writing they choose, the letter has the air of trying to impress. 2. There is ample evidence above of various people's views on public expressions of religious faith during the Christmas. 3. It's pleasing to hear that they are open to the views of others and to dissent. That has not been readily apparent. It will be of some relief to their students, if that is the case. While I sincerely wish a Happy New Year to all, please proceed to have whatever kind of year you would like to have.

When you look at the experience in Calgary West, you will learn that the Conservative Party HQ frustrated local constituency efforts to replace the sitting MP, even though Rob Anders has been a national embarrassment on several occasions.

I agree with reference23 here. It's not the way democracy should work but this is no time for ideals. Jim Hillyer needs to go. There is no way he should be given the opportunity to collect an MP's pension. He does not work for his constituents and is an embarrassment to all of us. Remember his 6 gun shooter salute after the abolition of the gun registry? Remember his ludicrously high expenses? I have met this man and he is not "mentally agile". Let's ensure he has no chance of representing us again.

Some people may want to get their conservative party membership so that when another conservative runs against Hillyer (in his riding), you can vote him out . Then in the provincial or federal election you can still vote for another party ,if you want. But if you want Hillyer gone you must be able to vote against him in his riding. And you have to have a conservative party membership to do that. You can be a member of another party at the same time if you want. Some people may not know this. And also no doubt others can explain this better than myself. Please do, if it will help, great! Perhaps Hillyer may get some people bused in to that vote. Fine we have to be prepared with our own bus or something similar.

At the risk of feeding the troll, I would like to address a few points: RN-P thinks the letter is too difficult for the "common folk." I prefer to give our neighbours more credit than that. Second, s/he misconstrues the letter as an effort to prevent all public religious expression. In fact, if religion were to be outlawed, I would fight for its preservation. People should be allowed to believe whatever they want. Third, s/he claims we are "thin-skinned" academics, while failing to understand that defending one's position does not mean that one is intolerant of other views or does not want to hear dissent. At the risk of sounding insincere or being accused of "attacking" someone, I will also wish everyone a Happy New Year.

Yes, a Happy New Year all round! But one does not need a Catholic Jewish, Islamic or secular higher education to know that society imposes many limitations on free speech. One does not insult the bride when giving a speech at her wedding or the deceased at a funeral but we are legally entitled to do this. We do NOT contest Mr Hillyer's right to religious expression, merely his use of his office as MP to do so. The 11 of us were discussing his article amongst ourselves and we thought we would write a collective letter. Think of it as a mini-petition, the more who sign on the better. It was nothing more than that.

Well there was comparatively little public outcry about this http://www.globallethbridge.com/lethbridge+mp+travel+expenses+2nd+in+parliament/6442755509/story.html Using Rob Anders, the MP from Calgary west as a precedent , Mr. Hillyer's chances are excellent. Only the proposed electoral boundary changes might save those offended by Mr.Hillyer's style of representation from further torment.
