You know, JT: you're absolutely right. You did not deserve mockery, and I am sorry. I was not respectiful enough. Over the last six months, this board has attracted some people whom I would not trust on my front porch to deliver a handbill. There is no reason to assume you are so. My original point, to which you responded, is that historical views of issues like personhood change, and I still maintain that we look at issues very differently than we did at the times in which the biblical books were written, books on which some people base the views they use to oppose choice today. I do not believe the Bible to be the infallible word of God, but it certainly contains material of great wisdom and social importance. I got a ladle full of verses and chick tracts for the first two decades of my life, so I bristle at the citation of passages. But you obviously read thoroughly and thoughtfully, and you have every right to your beliefs.

The reason I was pushing you to respond to the scripture was because you were using it to defend your position and then saying in the next post it was "fairy tales". You can't have it both ways. Either it's a solid foundation for decision making or it's just stories. Either its 100% right or 100% wrong. There's no inbetween. Anyway, I thank you for the respectful debate and leave you with John 14:6. Many Blessings.

Dude, we shouldn't keep boring people with this. I doubt the readers care about our little text-messaging jag. There is all kinds of blood spilled in the B-eye-b-ell-e: but God seems most interested in the blood of people. Clusters of cells aren't people. Heck, I'm still not convinced that He always sees infants as people. And if God had a specific view on this, he would have said thou shalt suck it up if you are raped, are the victim of incest, if the fetus is killing you, or if you made a mistake that is going to make it so that you have to live in poverty. Verily. Any rule maker that micromanages down to dietary habits would not leave over to interpretation something this important.

Hey Assiniboia, You mention that throughout the Bible that children aren't given more precedence than adults. Your statment implies that they are not given any less either and I agree with that. I have yet to see any justification from you on your use of Exodus 21. Please respond to that as well. Bottom line, it's very clear. God is not pleased when innocent blood is shed. As far as the dietary laws are concerned they are there to be a benefit to mankind. Shellfish are scavengers created to clean the ocean floor and were not intended to be food. I'm not going to tell you whether to eat it or not. I was just explaining because you asked. The bigger issue to me is speaking up for those who can't speak for themselves. Have a great day.

I am not going to get into the whole Bible BS. I believe that it is a woman's choice, and only her choice to have an abortion. It isn't up to me, or anyone else. I just don't know why the Bible and spouting scriptures has to be involved in a discussion about abortion

Hey, Boris. Your book of folk tales can be taken a bunch of ways, including those in Exodus. You have your interpretation, and that's great for you. Throughout those stories, children aren't really given more precedence than adults, as far as I can see, and nothing in them suggests that the unborn products of reproductive activity are much seen as children, in any literal sense. What you don't want to address is that God tells us not to eat certain things on certain days, but He doesn't bother to say that a few cells should be given the same standing as adults -- and don't hurt them. I assume that "Thou shalt not kill" doesn't apply to other non-people, so why to clusters of cells? We seem to be doing okay working this out for the 21st century; I'll leave you to mete out justice in the centuries before the birth of Christ. Everyone needs a hobby, I guess.

Hey Assiniboia, Glad to hear from you. When the scriptures say "Thou shall not murder" and "The LORD hates hands that shed innocent blood" that is explicit ennough for me to make a decision on it. Also, I don't believe that you responded to my rebuttal on your Exodus 21 quote. Coud you please reply to that as well? Thanks, and talk soon.
