After a solid front nine during the final round of the Lethbridge Amateur Golf Championship at the Lethbridge Country Club Sunday, a few lipped-out putts and one wayward drive put Travis Kemp in a bit of hot water. It wasn’t enough to knock him out of top spot as Kemp carded a two-day 147 to reel in this year’s men’s title. “It started well. I made some birdies on one and four and was two-under after the front nine,” said Kemp, who beat out Justin Nagy by three strokes for top spot. “I kind of scraped around on the back and shot 74. So it’s alright. I just couldn’t quite get the putts to fall. I hit some pretty good shots, I just burned a couple edges and that was it. I made a dumb move on 18, but I got away with it so that was alright. I hit it out of bounds off the tee, but I made par with my second ball. So that was good.” Scraping his way around the back nine or not, Kemp heard his lead was still intact as he approached the final holes. “I knew between our group I had about four shots, but it was so hard to know because you heard the rumours that guys were playing well in the front,” said Kemp. ”You just have to play, you have no idea.” It’s been a solid summer on the links for Kemp, who competed at the Alberta Open back in May. “I’m moving forward, playing a few things and taking it pretty easy,” he said. In fact he’s moving south come September as Kemp heads to Dallas to tee it up and Northwood University. “That’s the main outlook right now,” said Kemp, who plans to study economics at Northwood. ”It’ll be my first year heading down. So it’s going to be a lot of fun. I’ll leave around the Sept. 1. It should take about three days to get down and we’ll get right into it. It should be four years there and it’ll be a great time.” While she admitted she didn’t exactly shoot the lights out, Alice Miller’s score was still tops among the ladies golfers as the Paradise Canyon Golf Resort member carded a two-day 172. “Nobody had a spectacular weekend, but what can you do,” asked Miller. “I hit the ball well, but I was consistently light with my putting, hence the 85. It was one of those days, I just didn’t adjust to the speed of the greens here. “It’s a beautiful course. It’s tree’d and the greens are undulated. You have hazards all over the place and bunkers and different throughout. So you have to pay attention to the shot you’re making. Because of all the rain everybody has had this year the rough is thick, so it can be a penalty getting out of the rough.” Though Kemp heard murmurs throughout his final round about how was where on the leaderboard, Miller preferred to put her head down and keep playing. “I just play my shot, I don’t play against other people, it’s all about making the shot. I never know,” she said. With the city amateur title tucked away, Miller now turns her attention to the Henderson Lake Classic Aug. 1-3. “So I’ll be playing in that one and then our club championship is two weekends after that,” she said.
