Lacrosse playoffs tonight Print E-mail

They’re banged up, they’re bruised, but they’re battling.
Now, the Bert & Macs Barracudas Tier 2 lacrosse team will leave it all out on the floor tonight as, down to their last Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League playoff life, they host the Medicine Hat Sun Devils at 8 p.m. at Community Savings Place.
The objective is simple: hand the Sun Devils their first loss of the season and live to fight another day, that day being Game 3 of the teams’ opening-round series slated to take place on Sunday with the winner advancing to the provincial finals next weekend in Fort Saskatchewan.
The flipside of that scenario, lose and it’s season over.
Which makes tonight’s contest an important one.
“It would be an understatement, for sure,” said Barracudas head coach Jeff Blinco, whose team dropped an 8-7 overtime heartbreaker to the Sun Devils Wednesday night in Medicine Hat.
“It was really close. We’ve said it all along that we’ve been running short on the bench because of some injuries and some sickness that has gone through the team.”
So it stands to reason there will no rah-rah speeches from the coaches in anticipation of tonight’s game.
“They know what they need to do and the coaches don’t need to say a whole lot,” said Blinco. “They’re young adults (and know) what it’s going to take to win.”
However, the bumps and bruises continued to pile up Wednesday.
Kole Talbot sustained a knee injury, but stayed in the game.
“He hung in there and hobbled up and down the floor the best he could,” said Blinco.
Meanwhile, Jeff Bobinec hurt his wrist in Wednesday’s game.
“(The) two of them went to the doctor (Thursday), so they’re going to rest up and hopefully be back and ready to go (Friday),” said Blinco.
NOTES — Brody Wojtowicz and Bobinec scored twice in Wednesday’s loss to the Sun Devils . . . Two players finished in the top 10 in scoring as Wojtowicz tied for first with 37 points (19 goals, 18 assists) while Talbot was eighth with 25 points (16 G–9A).
