Like dedicated fans waiting to purchase tickets to their favourite rock band, they began lining up well in advance at the front doors.
As the minutes wound down before doors opened, at least 30 people had gathered in front of the Lethbridge Public Library on Saturday including Kirean Biggins who was eager to get his hands on a steal of a deal.
“I am always looking for a good bargain,” said Biggins, who was in search of technical books, reference books and old maps to satisfy his interest in geography. “Whenever you see a good book, you just know it’s the one you are looking for.”
As soon as the doors opened, the crowd eagerly made its way into the library for the Friends of the Lethbridge Public Library annual book sale and wasted no time heading down the stairs to the theatre gallery that was filled with an assortment of used books.
Book fanatics had a chance to sort through more than 5,000 books, which range from a variety of topics such as politics, travel, cooking, biography, religion, comics and history — all for a mere buck of two. VHS tapes were also up for grabs, along with a few DVDs and CDs.
The sea of books have all been donated by the public and a few second-hand book stores.
“It’s amazing. We have just been inundated with paperbacks,” said Karran Thorpe, one of the sale organizers.
“We have a whole gamut of categories this year. This has everything for all the different age ranges.”
The annual book sale has been going on for more than five years and is an annual fundraiser for the library. Funds from the sale are used for the purchase of equipment that typically is a large cost for the library and doesn’t fit into its normal budget. Last year, a new video system was purchased for the theatre gallery which has been used frequently by staff and the public.
Books in the ongoing Friends Booktique, which are normally priced from .50 to $5, will feature half-price deals, allowing everyone the opportunity to stock up on summer reading materials.
The sale will continue today from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. with the public paying $3 for a bag to fill with books.
