BLAZ ROBERT GERRY KOSTA (MARCH 27, 1952 – JUNE 28, 2009)
Born Timmins, Ontario, son of Frank Kosta and Anna (Esposito) Kosta. Bob worked in mining and was an interprovincial red seal glazier. He was a compagno who spoke Italian, read widely and voraciously, and had a bright, inquiring mind. Bob was gentle, good to the core, forgiving, loyal, responsible, and unbelievably hard working. He deeply loved his family: especially his daughters Lauren and Marita. He is loved and painfully missed by his sister Patty, nephews Jason and Ben, brother John and Sue, wife Mary and her extended family, friends Joachim, Lee, Normand, and Zeynep. His spouse Ursula Daniels and his brother-in-law and best friend John Wozak predeceased Bob. Bob had many stories and interests, and a great sense of humour. He liked to garden, cook, ride his bike, listen to music, enjoyed Toastmasters and his book club. He truly supported and encouraged the women in his life. We love you with all our hearts and will miss you forever, gentle, quiet, patient, and dearest father, and friend. Bob's family will hold a private remembrance. Thanks to Bob's friends and co-workers for your support and many kindnesses.

HANNAH BORTHWICK, beloved wife of the late Jack Borthwick, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 1, 2009.
Hannah is survived by her children Marlene Widmer, Doug (Carol) Borthwick, Skifty (Wendy) Borthwick; grandchildren Tyler (Sonja) Borthwick, Travis (Teresa) Borthwick, Rob Widmer, Joe (Cindy) Widmer, Colleen Widmer; as well as 9 great-grandchildren; brother Cliff (Norma) Provo; sisters Arleta Wrubleski and Verna.
Besides her beloved husband Jack, Hannah was predeceased by her parents Frank and Sadie Provo, siblings Ralph and Ivy, and son-in-law Don Widmer.
Hannah was born on September 9, 1924 in Claire, SK. She grew up on the family farm close to Wadena, SK. She came to Fort Macleod in 1945 to visit her brother who was stationed with the Airforce and met the love of her life, Jack, who was with the Army also stationed in Fort Macleod. Hannah spent most of her life in Fort Macleod until failing health forced her to move to assisted living facilities in Lethbridge; first at Blue Sky Lodge and the last 6 years under the wonderful care at the Park Meadows Good Samaritan Village. Hannah was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary for 60 years.

CATHERINE JEAN (STAFFORD) Burton
It is with deep sadness that Jean’s family announces her passing on June 14, 2009 at the age of 89 years.
She is predeceased by both her sister Elizabeth (Aug 21, 1995) and her brother Jim (Oct 15, 1973), as well as her loving husband Gordon, who left this earth on August 25, 1990).
Jean was born on October 8, 1919 in Ottawa, Ontario, the youngest of Catherine and James Walter Stafford’s three children. Mr. Stafford was a federal civil servant who had been the Dominion Lands Agent in Lethbridge during the great land rushes of 1908 and 1912.
When the Natural Resources Transfer Agreement was passed in 1930, Mr. Stafford was transferred to Edmonton, where he raised his family.
Jean completed high school in the Strathcona district of Edmonton and went on to the University of Alberta, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1939.
It was at the U of A where she met Gordon Burton of Claresholm. They married in a lunchtime ceremony on Sept. 3, 1941 in St. Stephen’s Chapel cathedral on the campus. Given that Gordon was bent on an academic career at the time, Jean thought a trade might be a good idea. She took a secretarial course and got a job at the U of A geology department. Jean later moved with Gordon to Ames, Iowa, where he completed his PhD and then on to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Montreal for university teaching positions.
In 1951, they moved to Claresholm to take over the family ranch. This represented a dramatic change of lifestyle for Jean. No longer a "faculty wife" in one of Canada’s largest urban centres, she found herself struggling to make a home in what was then a relatively remote part of the country.
The Porcupine Hills of the early ‘50s offered a rudimentary life style by contemporary standards. Jean learned to cook on a wood-burning stove, coped with no indoor plumbing and learned about electricity generated by a windcharger. The telephone didn’t arrive until the mid ‘60s.
A keen bridge player and an avid reader, Jean was always interested in what was new in the world of letters and she remained an enthusiastic student of Canadian literature. She also maintained friendships with many of the members of her book club which helped to sustain her interests for many years.
After Gordon died in 1990, Jean continued to live in Claresholm where she stayed in touch with a network of loyal friends, many of whom she stayed in close contact with through their own challenges with health and aging. Jean understood the importance of staying active, and swam regularly until shortly before her death, spending many enjoyable hours with her friends at the Claresholm pool.
She is survived by four sons: John (Ewa) of Edmonton; Jay (Jan) and Rick (Susan), both of Claresholm; Randy (Kathy), of Saskatoon; nephew Tim (Rita) of Claresholm; eight grandchildren: James Burton, Jennie Burton (Tim Chalifoux), Tanya Burton (Jeff Kopas), Ryan Burton (Robyn), Kim Wachtler (Darren), Adam Burton (Krista), Rachel and Anna Burton, as well as eight great-grandchildren.
Her family is deeply appreciative of the generous and supportive staff at the Claresholm General Hospital and the Cottonwood Village retirement residence who treated Jean with such kindness in her final days.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be sent to the Calgary Health Trust in support of the Claresholm General Hospital: Calgary Health Trust – 800, 11012 Macleod Trail SE, Calgary, AB. T2J 6A5.

HOY
On July 1, 2009, EVA HELENA WESTERGREEN SIEWERT HOY took her love of family and friends to those who await her with open arms in a better place. She just celebrated her 100th birthday April 3rd and was so proud that she got a special greeting from the Queen.
She leaves to remember her and rejoice in the many happy times they shared, her children: DeLynn (Marc) Siewert, Ione (Carl) Skafte, Deanna (Dave Kwasnicki) Siewert. Eva loved and treasured her second family, Tom’s children: Marjory (Karl) Wildeboer, Mona (Jim deceased) Hoy, and John (Lenore deceased) Wolanuk. Her twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren brought so much joy to her that she always wanted to be surrounded by their pictures so that she could gaze at them at her leisure. Eva is also survived by her sister, Daisy Crawford; and her faithful, loyal and loving home teacher, Ron Cosgrove.
Eva was predeceased by her first husband, Reinhold Siewert, and her second husband, Tom Hoy, as well as her daughter, Shirley, and step-children, Jim Hoy and Lenore Wolanuk. She was predeceased by her father and mother, Augustus and Anna Holmerson Westergreen, and her brothers: Eric, Fred, Allan, Sidney, Frank, Willis and Wallace, and sister, Elna Brantner.
Eva was born April 9, 1909 in Whitewater, Manitoba to Augustus and Anna Holmerson Westergreen. When she was only five months old, Eva came with her family to a homestead in Wrentham.
In 1937 she married Reinhold (Reiny) Siewert. They lived in a small house with many of Reiny’s children from his first marriage. Reiny died on January 17, 1952.
She worked at the Crystal Café for many years. She held various jobs in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) but especially remembers the great times with friends during the various fund-raising efforts to build the new LDS church in Wrentham.
In 1969 Eva moved to Lethbridge to be closer to her family. She worked at Edith Cavell, Woolworth’s, and finally at the Park Plaza Restaurant working there until she retired in 1974.
In 1971, Eva answered a letter in the Western Producer from a widowed Manitoba farmer looking for friendship: Tom Hoy. They were married in 1972 and spent twenty-three wonderful years together traveling, gardening, going to church, visiting family and friends, and just enjoying each other. Tom died June 12, 1995.
She looked forward to the special times with the Wrentham Birthday Club as they shared their birthdays, and reminisced. These were special times and special friends for her.
At Eva’s request, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, Eva would certainly ask that you reach out to a special senior and tell them how much you care. Eva would also thank, as do her family, the special staff at Extendicare Lethbridge who cared for her so lovingly and patiently over the past seven years.

POSTMAN
ANTHONY “TONY” POSTMAN, died at the age of 71 years, at The Chinook Regional Hospital on Monday, June 29, 2009
Tony is survived by Pat, his wife of 43 years, a daughter, Carmen (Robert) Bogress of Ladner, BC, a son, Keanan (Glenda) Postman, of Lethbridge, AB, 5 grandchildren, Carley, Jordan and Madison Bogress and Cassidy and Noah Postman.
Tony is also survived by 2 brothers, John W. (Berdena) Postman of Ontario and Leslie (Karen) Postman of Lethbridge, and several nephews and nieces. Tony was predeceased by an infant granddaughter, Eden Grace Postman.
Tony was born on August 11, 1937 in Lethbridge to Herman and Ada Postman of Monarch, AB. He attended elementary school in Monarch, high school in Nobleford and a year of college in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He enjoyed playing the sports of hockey and baseball. He farmed near Nobleford until retirement. Tony and Pat moved from Nobleford to Lethbridge in 1990. Tony’s farming skills were shared voluntarily with farmers in Nicaragua through OXFAM and later he helped Canadian Food Grains Bank by encouraging farmers in southern Alberta to donate grain to C.F.G.B., then helping to distribute the grain to Ethiopia and Sudan.
As a carpenter, Tony used his skills in several volunteer assignments in U.S.A., rebuilding homes destroyed by floods and hurricanes. He was also involved in school projects in Honduras. Tony was a charter member of Habitat for Humanity in Lethbridge and led the building committee for many years until his back pain forced him to stop.
Tony spent several years interacting with young offenders and sharing his faith with them.
Tony enjoyed harmonizing with the Lethbridge Barbershop Chorus, two quartets, and a Mennonite choir that toured Syria and Jordan in 2000.
For the last several years he was a volunteer with the Lethbridge Immigrant Services, and was called the “the living legend” at the office. Many new immigrants bonded with Tony as he delivered groceries, visited, helped them in numerous ways and drank lots of tea.
Tonys greatest joy was his grandchildren. He loved to cuddle them and rock them to sleep when they were young. As the kids got older, grandpa spent hours playing games, going on bike rides, trips to the farm, teaching a carpentry lesson and even sharing a joke or two. Grandpa had a soft knee to sit on, a playful wink, a warm hug and a joyous grin every time he saw his beloved grandchildren.
Tony also enjoyed travelling and eating out, especially with the kids and grandkids.
