Slam the brakes on red light cameras Print E-mail

So now Lethbridge is thinking of joining the ranks of cities with red light cameras. Before we allow this to go forward, we need to consider a few unpleasant realities.
First of all, other cities with the cameras, as far as I can find, report no decrease in speeding, and actually an increase in the number of accidents. While there does seem to be a demonstrated decrease in so-called T-bone collisions, there is an even greater increase in rear-end collisions due to people madly trying to stop before the intersection. And that's in Phoenix, Ariz., where they don't have to deal with the added problem of winter weather. With the way the city plows and sands our streets, this system would be a great cash cow for them up to six months out of every year.
Start calling your aldermen, people, and demand — not ask, not request — that they put a stop to this because once the city succeeds in putting it in, they will find ways and reasons to never remove it.
