Two people died on southern Alberta highways within the last 48 hours.
In the first instance, a 42-year-old southern Alberta man died in a head-on collision early Tuesday near Claresholm.
Investigators with Claresholm RCMP believe the unnamed man died on impact when his westbound Ford pickup crossed the centre line into the path of an oncoming semi trailer. The collision occurred at around 2:30 a.m. along Highway 520 about 10 kilometres east of Claresholm.
“There was no evidence to suggest alcohol was a factor, but we won’t know until a post-mortem is completed,” said Sgt. Robin Alexander of Claresholm RCMP.
The name of the dead man was still being withheld until his family had been notified. The driver of the semi trailer was uninjured. Collision analysts with Lethbridge RCMP are assisting with the investigation.
Tuesday afternoon, a 60-year-old woman from Vulcan died in a collision at the intersection of Highway 23 and Secondary Highway 519.
At about 1:30 p.m., Picture Butte and Lethbridge RCMP, as well as local emergency services personnel, responded to a two-vehicle collision. Picture Butte RCMP reported Wednesday that a 1996 Plymouth Voyager was heading southbound on Highway 23 when a Ford F-350 pickup truck with a gooseneck trailer made a turn to go west on Highway 519  towards Granum.
The 60-year-old driver of the Plymouth Voyageur was airlifted on scene by STARS Air Ambulance, but died before arrival at Foothills Hospital in Calgary.
Two passengers in the Voyageur were taken to Chinook Regional Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
The 19-year-old driver of the pickup did not sustain any injuries. Alcohol was not a factor in this collision.
The collision is still being investigated by Picture Butte and Lethbridge RCMP Traffic Services. Picture Butte RCMP said charges are pending against the driver of the pickup.
