Re: Greg Weadick’s column, June 26. I am certain that my 100-year-old mother will be so delighted when she gets moved to assisted living that she will jump right out of her wheelchair and run to the nearest microwave to make herself some instant porridge. (She would never pay for breakfast when she can certainly make it herself.) And she will be so happy that those terrible people from the nursing home no longer force her to be in a wheelchair; since she moved to assisted living she can miraculously walk again. Mother would have been indignant at the thought of being in a nursing home when she was 60, or 70, or 80, or even 85. She would live in her own house, look after her own yard, and do her own cooking forever. Anyone who implied otherwise was crazy! And then she had several small strokes, and then she broke her hip. And then she could not look after herself as she had several more strokes. And now she is often not certain where she is; debilitating arthritis keeps her in a wheelchair. Mother could not imagine being in a nursing home any more than a healthy 16-year-old can image needing hip replacement. Can you imagine needing care and there is none to be had? That is what MLA Weadick’s government will give you: Miraculous cures in assisted living because there will be no nurses to help you and your loved ones.
