Bulls offer best Canada Day experience Print E-mail

The best place to be on Canada Day is a beach in Hawaii. Or Disneyland.
But if you can’t make it there, get to Spitz Stadium. Without a doubt, the best show in town will be the Lethbridge Bulls’ doubleheader against the Edmonton Prospects. Tickets are dirt cheap, the concessions are awesome and, thanks to a three-game winning streak, the baseball is better than ever.
Head coach Scott Rhodes has his players in a great position and with a pair of wins, they’re ahead of Edmonton in the Western Major Baseball League standings, so get out and enjoy yourselves at the park all day.
The Bulls are kicking it off with a pancake breakfast from 8-11 a.m. Then you can walk around Henderson Lake Park for a bit before returning to the stadium at 1 p.m. for Game 1. Take another stroll down by the lake before coming back for Game 2 at 7:35 p.m.
The breakfast is $3 and after Game 2, the fireworks are free.
It’s the best way to spend Canada Day. I have been there as a fan a few times and it really is one of the best ways to spend the day. And feel free to throw your peanut shells at Herald reporter Dale Woodard, who gets to go to the game while I’m stuck in the office.
Seriously, throw the peanut shells at him, he’s not allergic. Bald guy, skinny, you can’t miss him.

Randy Bardock, the coach of the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s soccer team, is in Serbia at the World Student Games (or Summer Universiade) as an assistant coach/manager.
While dodging shrapnel, he took the time to drop me an email to say the Canadian men’s soccer representatives finished their exhibition warm-up to the event, which starts today.
Against a Serbian Select team, Canada managed a 0-0 draw in what Randy called a “torrential downpour” before a 1-0 loss to England. He said a Canadian goalkeeping mistake cost them a draw in that one. They then beat France 1-0 and have some momentum heading into their opener today against Czech Republic.
Randy hates self-promotion, but I think it’s a real feather in Lethbridge’s cap that one of our local coaches is a part of this and I’m glad he let us know how the team’s doing.

We missed athletes-of-the-year from a few schools, and I’m more than willing to squeeze them in over the next week or so. If you have photos of the kids with their plaques or trophies, please send them, along with some information, to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

I just knew the Hurricanes would hire Rich, I just knew it. I may not have known which Rich was which, but I saw Riches in the team’s future.

Congratulations to the Steacys, for their amazing finishes at the Canadian Track and Field Championships.
Especially, though, to Jim. It seems Jim has a girlfriend and several of his good friends are concerned this will have a negative effect on his ability to rule the hammer throw world at the 2012 Olympics.
He insulted my Detroit Lions hat some time ago, so I’m throwing my support behind his sister, Heather. She’s seen some fantastic improvements in her throwing lately and, she didn’t insult my Detroit Lions hat.

Worse, he made fun of the hat in front of my daughter. Inexcusable, Mr. Steacy. If you weren’t so darn big, I’d whup you. Go Heather!
