City council will likely be asked today to join a lobby effort aimed at preventing the closure of the gynecological cytology lab at Chinook Regional Hospital.
Bev Muendel-Atherstone, a local psychologist, is to address council regarding plans by the central board of Albert Health Services to close the local lab and centralize such operations to Edmonton and Calgary. Concerns include the rationale for the decision as well as the greater potential for mix-ups in lab results by transporting them to and from out-of-town labs.
Organizations included in the lobby effort include Friends of Medicare, Womanspace Resource Centre, and the YWCA.
In other matters, council will also consider recommendations from the city transportation department on whether to allow a contentious access road between Southgate Boulevard South and 43 Street South.
