A preliminary hearing has been set for a reputed gang member charged after an altercation more than a year ago that left one man dead and others wounded. Luke Daniel Paul, 24, appeared in Lethbridge Provincial Court on Wednesday to have the hearing set for the case, which has built up considerable history. Paul was originally charged with attempted murder stemming from an incident Sept. 2, 2007 where several men – all allegedly associated with the Crazy Dragons gang – arrived at a home in the 500 block of 14 Street South. According to police, five or six gunshots were fired at people inside the home before a confrontation erupted in the street. When officers arrived, they found 18-year-old Colin Chalifour of Edmonton gravely injured. He later died at Chinook Regional Hospital. A resident of the home was originally charged with Chalifour's murder, but those charges were stayed after it was found he had acted in self defence. Paul was originally charged with second-degree murder, but that charge was also stayed and replaced with four counts of assault with a weapon and three weapons offences. A stay means the charge is not pursued, but can be brought up again within one year. The matter nearly proceeded to a preliminary inquiry last summer until Paul's lawyer resigned from his practice, forcing Paul to seek new counsel. Paul will be back in court for the hearing Oct. 26 to 30.
