A man was taken to hospital with serious burns resulting from an early Sunday morning fire in a fifth-wheel trailer parked in an industrial park five kilometres south of Lethbridge. “A gentleman living in the trailer suffered burns to 30 per cent of his body,” said Platoon Sgt. Barry Sorensen of the Lethbridge Fire Department. He added two pumpers from Lethbridge and Coaldale Emergency Services extinguished the blaze at Stewart Siding Industrial Park, which began at approximately 1 a.m. and razed the fifth-wheel trailer. The fire also did significant damage to a truck parked to the left of the trailer and a truck with a camper parked next to that, as well as another van parked on the other side of the trailer. Emergency crews found the injured man inside a recreational vehicle parked in the area. An ambulance from Coaldale took the patient to hospital. Sorensen estimated the damage to be approximately $30,000. No buildings were involved in the fire, he said. “It’s of a non-suspicious nature. No cause has been determined,” Sorensen added. He noted an investigation will likely begin today as it is outside city limits and under $50,000 damage. The industrial park is located at 138 Trackside Drive, five kilometres south of Lethbridge on Highway 4. Lethbridge RCMP reported the man was airlifted to Calgary by STARS air ambulance. Police haven’t released the man’s name, or his age, because they’re still trying to notify family members, said RCMP Const. Kary Moore. “My understanding is he had permission from the owner to stay in this camper-trailer unit,” said Moore. While the unit was badly damaged by fire, Sorensen said officials aren’t sure where the blaze may have started. Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact the Lethbridge RCMP by phoning 403-329-5080.
