January 3, 1932 – January 29, 2009
Rosaline Agnes Shot Both Sides (nee Hoof) passed away at the Cardston Municipal Hospital on Thursday, January 29, 2009, at the age of 77. Rosaline was predeceased by her husband, Chief Jim Shot Both Sides Sr, in December 2002. She was also predeceased by her parents Ronald and Nina Hoof, her brothers, Reggie, Joseph and Ralph Hoof, her sisters, Ada (Pete) Weasel Moccasin, Eva (Willie) Crop Earned Wolf, and Angelina Hoof; also, by her daughter Lena in 1965 and great-granddaughter, Nicole Red Crow-Blood, in 2007. Rosaline also shared her life with Lawrence Black Plume and Morris Across The Mountain, who have gone on ahead of her. Her son in laws Melvin Redcrow, John Red Crow, Daniel Weasel Moccasin and Micheal Whitehawk, whom she had a good relationship with have also passed on. She leaves to mourn her loss her loving children: Bernice Red Crow, Rosaline (Cordell) Weasel Moccasin, Virginia Blackplume, Larry (Verna), Barry, Jerry (Joanne), Francis (Brenda), Randall (Corrine), Phyllis, Nina (Lee), Deanna (Ed), Mildred (John) Chief Moon, Christine (Roy) Bare Shin Bone, Clara Chief Moon, Flora (Hugh) Healy, Lena, Gabrielle, Mary Ann (Matthew) Chief Moon, Patsy Left Hand, Bernard, Alfred, Chris, Roderick (Molly), Jim Jr (Linda), and Donald (Mavis). She will also be greatly missed by her grandchildren: Melva, Lawrence (Debbie), Ian (Noemie), Clint (Lacey), Shawna, Russell, Marcella (Tom), Jackie (Ronnie Jr.), Joshua (Dianna), Norina (Rod), Cody (Kelli), Bobbi Jo, Lawrence (Lisa), Sarah, Kim (Lee), Tiffany, Rudy, Eva, Bradley, Anna, Jared, Twyla, Lizzie, Aryson, Akuma, Myles, Chancy, Peyton, Sage (Megan), and Karli. Rosaline was also the great grandmother of 28 and great great grandmother of four. She had a large extended family of relatives and nieces and nephews which includes the Shot Both Sides, Across the Mountains, Black Plumes, Old Shoes, Weasel Moccasins, Hoofs, Stabs Down, Many Grey Horses, Hunt, Little Leaf, Provost and Sharp Adze, Rider families. She had her very special and close friends, her sister in law, Rachel Hoof, Lucy Blood, and Isabel Healy-Fox who will miss their daily phone calls and visits with mom.
Rosaline had a long and fulfilling life with family and friends. She was faced with many challenges in her life and she trusted her belief in God to give her strength and courage to overcome them. She was a single parent of eleven children and she raised her family with honesty, respect and love. She was a good role model to her children teaching them to have strong work ethics that they too will be able to provide a home for their families. She was raised with the traditional values of her people and these too she instilled in her children, teaching them that prayers and ceremonies were an integral part of honoring the gift of life. Throughout her life time she attended both the Catholic Church and Sun Dance which gave her solace and spiritual strength. Rosaline was a humble woman and sought guidance and support from her elders. Her brothers and sisters were a great support to her and when they passed on Rosaline accepted the role of matriarch of the family.
Rosaline reaped the rewards of her hard work and faith in her later years. She had many opportunities to travel the world. But the three pilgrimages she made were the highlights of her travels: in 1978 she traveled to Mexico to attend Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine: in1979 she went to France and attended mass at The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes: in 1983 she went to St. Joseph’s Basilica in Montreal. Rosaline made her Cruisillo in 1984 in Gleichen, and the prayers and support she received during the four days were appreciated and always remembered. Rosaline met Pope John Paul II when he came to Canada in 1985. She and Jim were invited to receive Holy Communion from the Pope and this was both an exhilarating and humbling experience for them because of their strong faith and beliefs in the Catholic Church. She also traveled to Italy and Australia.
Rosaline also traveled with the Elders on their trips to Phoenix, Sedona Park, Red Canyon and Legal Mexico. Her trip to Vancouver with the Elders was the most memorable for her because she went on a ship. She was an active member of the Elders group and always supported community events.
She married Chief Jim Shot Both Sides in 1975, she was the wife of the last Hereditary Chief of the Blood Nation. In this role, she met many politicians and dignitaries nationally and internationally. In 1977, they attended the historic event of the resigning of the Treaty Seven in London, England, where they were guests of Queen Elizabeth II. She met the Queen at two other events to which they were personally invited to. The political gatherings she attended and the people she met made her acutely aware of the need to maintain good relations with all peoples regardless of their politics and culture. She would say we are all people, we just think differently.
We remember our mother for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering support through the years she was with us. Her family always came first. She had many friends but the ones that made her days go by as she sat in her kitchen, going about her day, we wish to thank for keeping her company and sharing their time and stories with her. She treasured her friends.
We would like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and Staff of the Cardston Municipal and Lethbridge Regional Hospitals for the care and kindness towards our mother.
There will be a Celebration of her Life for the family on Thursday, February 5, 2009, at Edens Funeral Chapel in Fort MacLeod at 4:00 pm. The Wake Service will be held at the Senator Gladstone Hall on the Blood Reserve on February 5 from 7:00 – 11:00 pm and then she will be at her home from 12:00 – 9:00 am. The Funeral Service will be held at St Mary’s Church on the Blood Reserve on February 6, 2009 at 11:00 am. The burial will be at the Pioneer Cemetery in Lavern.
