BANKS
MRS. CATHERINE HELEN BANKS of Lethbridge, passed away on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at the Edith Cavell Care Centre at the age of 87 years.
Catherine was born in Calgary on November 27, 1921 to George and Malvena (Zote) Dutchik. She met and married Oamer Banks while living in Calgary and they adopted Pamela in 1957. In the early sixties they moved to Lethbridge where Kay opened and operated Oamer’s Café, she was very proud of having the first malt machine in Lethbridge. In 1965 the family moved to Helena, Montana where Catherine resided until 2002. While in Helena she worked for Sheffie’s Pancake House and thirty-five years for 4B’s Restaurant. She continued working well after retirement years and prior to her stroke in 2002 she worked as a personal care aid in a nursing home outside of Helena.
For many years she loved her cabin and silver mine located in Rimini, a ghost town twenty miles outside of Helena. The one room cabin located up on a mountain was her piece of heaven on earth. She spent as much time as the weather would permit living there until she was snowed out and had to come back into town.
Catherine is survived by her daughter Pamela (Gerald) Waldern; grandchildren Jerry (Pam) Waldern and Bonnie (Justin) Wilson; great-grandchildren Wesley, Justin, and Marcus Waldern; her siblings Lillian Sharpe, John (Shirley) Dutchik and Betty Hunter as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families. She is also survived by Pamela’s father Oamer Banks. Catherine was predeceased by her parents George and Malvena (Zote) Dutchik, and siblings twin brothers at birth, Lucy Dutchik, and George Dutchik.

CHIKINDA – Jean Louise
May 31, 1918 – December 24, 2008
Jean Louise Chikinda of Calgary passed away at Extendicare Hillcrest on December 24, 2008 at the age of 90 years.
Born in Calgary, she lived much of her early years in Barons, AB where her father was the town’s postmaster and magistrate. She later attended high school at Mount Royal College in Calgary. Upon leaving Mount Royal, she later married her first husband Aime Dechene and moved to Ottawa where she worked for naval intelligence during the Second World War. During that war, she took the flash signal that the German battleship Bismarck had been sunk. She moved back to Barons where she became (during her father’s illness) one of Alberta’s first female postmasters. When her father recovered from his illness, she began working for the post office in Calgary where she met her husband Walter. Jean then embarked on her third career working for the department of Veteran’s Affairs in Calgary. She retired from that job, but later decided she had retired too soon and thus began her fourth career working at the University of Calgary. Jean loved to garden and was a voracious reader. She enjoyed listening to her musical favourites: Johnny Cash, Nana Mouskouri and Luciano Pavarotti. In 2004, she was struck by a massive stroke. The doctors at the time thought she would die and placed her in a hospice. Jean was one of the very few to both enter and leave a hospice alive. She was transferred to Extendicare Hillcrest, where she spent her last years battling dementia. Though not always sure where she was, she never forgot the faces of her husband, son and daughter. Her characteristic sense of humour endured even until the end.
Jean is survived by her loving husband Walter Chikinda of Calgary; daughter, Aimee deValois of Barons, AB; son, Marc Chikinda of Calgary; grandchildren, Arie deValois of Lethbridge, Rachel Wittke (Paul) of Lethbridge and Rob deValois of Barons, AB; great-grand children, Abigail and Lilah Wittke of Lethbridge; sisters in-law, Rose Steedman (Doug), Claude Chikinda and Anne Chikinda; brothers in-law, Julian Chikinda and Orest Chikinda, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She will also be greatly missed by dear friend, Frances Hedges. Jean was predeceased by her parents, Jean Andrew (McIntyre) and Alexander Andrew; son in-law, Allan deValois and dear friends, Edith Ellis (Kennedy) and Gladys Laak (Moen).
Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Friday, January 2, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to express its profound gratitude to Extendicare Hillcrest staff, Chen, Rachel, Nurse Anna and Jean’s visiting companion Rolita, for the love and care they unconditionally gave Jean.
In living memory of Jean Chikinda a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH Telephone: (403) 276-2296.

COCKROFT
ROBERT (BOB) GRAINGER COCKROFT passed away peacefully on Sunday December 28, 2008, welcomed into the loving embrace of his beloved wife; his best friend; his companion; Beth, who predeceased him in November 2007.
Bob was born in Lamont, Alberta on June 20, 1923 to Fred and Lina and grew up with his brothers Stanley and Alan in Lamont and later in Edmonton. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force when he turned 18 and was on active service until July 1945.
His charm and engaging smile won the heart of his sweetheart, Elizabeth Yuzwak and they were married April 2, 1948. They began their life together in Edmonton, moving to Hinton and finally making the family home in Lethbridge. Bob became Dad to Wendy (Gerry) Carpenter and their children, Shaun (Tracey) Carpenter and great granddaughters, Chloe and Avery Carpenter and Darren (Melanie) Carpenter and great grandson Levi Carpenter; Brenda (Duane) Foster and her children, Melanie, John, and Greg Foster; Garry (Joan) Cockroft and their children, Derek and Karen Cockroft, and Bonnie (Klaus) Voss and their children, Nicole and Eric Voss. He was "Pa" to his grandchildren: he loved them dearly, without judgment, enjoying each as individuals, so very proud of their accomplishments. He was brother-in-law and Uncle Bob to a large extended family and enjoyed many weddings and family reunions over the years.
Bob was a Second Class Steam Engineer for the City of Lethbridge power plant until his early retirement when he and Beth enjoyed traveling across Canada; to Hawaii; cruising to Alaska and road trips with family to the U.S. He enjoyed woodworking projects and his children are the lucky recipients of his creativity.
Dad, Mom and the family built their family cabin at Beauvais Lake. There were countless early mornings trolling flatfish to catch rainbow trout for breakfast; swimming; weiner roasts and of course, work. The family grew and their grandchildren were able to spend memorable times at the cabin. "There won’t be very many more nights like this", was a favorite expression of his; and during every family get together someone repeats it and will remember the good times by continuing to repeat it.
Bob suffered a major stroke three months after his 75th birthday. Our Dad could fix anything, but he couldn’t fix this, even though he stubbornly tried. It broke Dad’s heart to see Mom ill and being powerless to help or comfort her.
The family will gather at a later date to join Dad and Mom for eternity; neither is lonely any more: he is now in perfect peace. We love you Pa.
