Help kids ‘fuel up’ for school Print E-mail

As I ventured out into the cold the other morning to let my ice cube of a truck run for awhile, I once again cursed myself for a longtime habit of driving on empty. Thoughts of a total thaw and a toasty vehicle went out the door due to the threat of running out of gas. It made me think about the hundreds of children who would be braving the elements as they trundled off to school without proper fuel in their “tanks” nor nourishment to jump-start their brains for a day of learning.
The Lethbridge Herald Charitable Foundation’s Food for Thought campaign is trying to change that. Now in its second year, all donations through Dec. 24  will go to Lethbridge public and Holy Spirit Catholic schools which run breakfast programs.
The talk around most office water coolers for the next few days will revolve around the weather. As a result, I thought some weather-related challenges might be in order. Perhaps one of the local tow truck companies could pledge some money for every battery boost provided in December and challenge others to follow suit. Or maybe there’s a coffee shop out there willing to make a donation for every cup of hot chocolate sold. Just think how much money could be raised if you threw in $5 for every time someone asked you: “Cold enough for you yet?” The cold weather snap, thankfully, isn’t endless, but the fundraising possibilities are.
Financial contributions to the Food for Thought campaign can be made from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Herald offices on 504 7 St. S. or by mail at Attention: Food for Thought, Lethbridge Herald, 504 7 St. S., Lethbridge, AB, T1J 2HI. Cheques can be made payable to the Lethbridge Herald Charitable Foundation. Tax receipts are available, upon request, for donations over $5 and all donors will be recognized in this column (which runs Tuesday to Saturday) unless they wish to remain anonymous.
We’d love to use this column to share with our readers your story, whether it be a challenge you’d like to issue, or a special fundraiser for our cause you've organized.
