RCMP are trying to determine the cause of a rollover crash Sunday night which destroyed a marked police car and sent a Mountie to hospital.
The crash occurred at about 9:30 p.m. on Highway 36 about 10 kilometres north of Vauxhall while the unnamed male constable, a 24-year veteran, was attempting to pull over a suspected impaired driver. Police are still trying to locate the other driver, who did not stop at the crash scene.
The officer was treated in hospital but escaped with only minor injuries. Damage to the police car is estimated at $30,000.
The crash is still under investigation, and it’s too early to say for sure what caused the police car to go out of control, said Const. Tamara Dreaddy of Taber/Vauxhall RCMP.
In the course of such investigations, she said, it’s standard procedure to review whether officers involved followed proper police policies.
Anyone with information on this incident or the possible whereabouts of the other driver is asked to contact RCMP at 403-223-4447 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
