A man accused of a murder in the Crowsnest Pass 18 years ago will wait a few more days before he is arraigned in Lethbridge Court of Queens’ Bench.
Michael Desmarais was to be arraigned Monday, but it was adjourned until Friday, at which time it will likely be resolved, defence lawyer Tracy Hembroff told court.
Desmarais was charged with the murder of Gordon Mills of Edmonton who was sightseeing in the Rocky Mountains in early July 1992. He never returned home a few days later as expected, and was last seen at a gas station in Banff before his body was found almost two months later near Leitch Colleries, east of the Crowsnest Pass. An autopsy revealed he had been shot.
Desmarais was charged in January 1993, but at the time he was serving a U.S. sentence for the brutal murder of 72-year-old William Menz, who was shot and killed July 14, 1992 at a rest stop near Beach, N.D., just east of the Montana border.
Desmarais was brought back to Canada last June after being released from serving the lengthy murder sentence in an Oregon penitentiary.
