Respecting beliefs a two-way street Print E-mail

In regard to Tony Ouwerkerk’s letter to the editor (Jan. 6), by definition a bigot is one who is “utterly intolerant of any differing creed, belief, or opinion.” For one to claim to not partake in the act of bigotry and then to further state that homosexuality is “eternal soul destroying” is a complete contradiction. If Mr. Ouwerkerk does not want to be called a bigot, he should not speak like one. He must learn to be respectful of the fact that not everyone shares the same religion as himself.
In an area such as the one we live in, it is easy to say the majority of people are practising some form of Christianity and it would be difficult for a practitioner of any of the other varying faiths from around the globe. Instead of making it harder for people partaking in lesser practised religions or lifestyles, we should accept the fact people will always be different.
With that said, I do also understand that people should be more respectful of Christian opinions as well, but it is a two-way street. You receive the respect that you deserve.
So next time, Mr. Ouwerkerk, you are put in a situation with someone who has a belief different than yourself, you should take a moment to listen to what they have to say; you may learn something that may surprise you.
