The local boy made good. And that was bad news for the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Red Deer Rebels forward and Coaldale product Adam Kambeitz scored a pair of goals and added an assist as the Rebels topped the ’Canes 4-3 during Western Hockey League action Friday night at the Enmax Centre. The loss drops the Hurricanes to 9-16-3-1, while the Rebels improve to 14-14-0-0. The Rebels were given a two-man advantage for almost 40 seconds in the opening two minutes of the game, but were unable to pull the trigger. The Hurricanes nearly drew first blood when Cam Braes fed Mitch Maxwell out front of the Red Deer net, but the goal was knocked loose as Maxwell shot. Maxwell and Braes went back to work on the next shift as Maxwell fed Braes on a two-on-one, but Braes was unable to poke it home. The Hurricanes went on their first power play when Red Deer was called for too many men and took mere seconds to turn that into a 1-0 lead as Austin Fyten added his name to the list of Teddy Bear Toss goal scorers, tapping home a rebound that sent the plush toys sailing 10:01 into the first. But the Rebels drew even a little over two minutes later when Kambeitz — a former member of the Val Matteotti Golden Hawks — broke in down the left wing and wristed a bullet high and glove side past ’Canes netminder Brandon Anderson to make it 1-1 with 7:47 left in the first. The chances kept coming for Maxwell, who fleeced a Rebels defenceman, but was unable to beat Red Deer netminder Darcy Kuemper with a little under five minutes remaining in the first. The Rebels nearly took a 2-1 lead 19 seconds into the second when Andrej Kudma’s wrist shot off the left wing hit Anderson’s glove and popped loose, but the ’Canes netminder was able to reach back and smother the loose puck. The Hurricanes found themselves down a man when Craig Orfino was called for roughing, but it was Lethbridge that almost went up 2-1 when Brody Sutter broke in alone on Kuemper, who stopped Sutter’s attempt, but gave ’Canes defenceman Derek Ryckman a juicy rebound he was unable to capitalize on. Kambeitz continued to put on a show for the hometown crowd, outhustling Sutter to the Lethbridge net and stuffing a rebound home off a shot from Turner Elson to put Red Deer up 2-1 with 3:05 remaining in the second. It didn’t take the Hurricanes long to tie the score at 2-2 when Mike Reddington’s point shot snaked through traffic and past Kuemper 44 seconds into the third for his first goal of the season. But Red Deer pulled ahead once again, this time on the man advantage when Elson poked home a feed from Daulton Siwak for a 3-2 lead 6:42 into the third. Kambeitz earned the second assist on the goal to round out his three-point night. Lethbridge kept the goal-swapping coming as Maxwell slammed his 14th of the season after some nice work in front from Brent Henke to tie it up at 3-3 midway through the third. Red Deer took the lead back when Brett Ferguson converted a fine wraparound attempt past Anderson to make it 4-3 with 8:41 to go. The Hurricanes went on the power play when Jordie Deagle was whistled down for tripping, but despite a few chances couldn’t pull the trigger. The Hurricanes put on some dying-seconds pressure with Anderson on the bench in favour of the extra attacker as the Rebels hung on for the 4-3 win. The Hurricanes are back at the Enmax Centre tonight as they host the Medicine Hat Tigers at 7 p.m.
