The Lethbridge Y’s Men AAA midget Hurricanes fell 3-2 to the Edmonton K of C Pats Sunday afternoon at Henderson Arena, dropping their record to 9-7-3 in the Alberta Major Hockey League. The Hurricanes dominated the action, out-shooting their opponents 34-24 but couldn’t find the back of the net, a source of concern for head coach Greg Cowie. “It’s something we’ll be working on again at practice this week,” said Cowie. “But I can’t fault the kids for their effort tonight. They worked and, really, they played very well. We just didn’t have that killer instinct and we’re going to have to work on that.” The Hurricanes received goals from Alex Elliott and Keyler Bruce. Bruce also provided a highlight-reel hit when he pasted Edmonton’s Dustin Fostvelt with an open-ice hit in the second period. The Hurricanes were hit with a handful of penalties the players considered questionable but Cowie said he stresses to his players that they focus on other matters. “Did the ref miss a call? Did the linesman miss an icing? Maybe, but it’s not their job to worry about those things. You go back, you pick up the puck and you keep working,” he said. “We’ve told them time and time again to worry about the controllables. Focus on the things that you, that the players have control over. “The referees didn’t miss 15 scoring chances today, we did.” The Hurricanes will get another crack at the Pats before the Christmas — and Mac’s Midget Tournament — break. “Hopefully, with another chance, the boys realize that they can beat this team and take advantage,” said Cowie. AAA bantams on a hot streak OKOTOKS A 4-0 win over the Okotoks Oilers put the Lethbridge Val Matteotti Hurricanes in great position in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League. The AAA bantam ’Canes have gone 4-0-1 in their past five games, giving head coach Chad Kletzel an early Christmas gift. “The players have started to buy in and they’re playing some good hockey right now,” said Kletzel, whose team improved to 8-7-1. “That’s what we expect to see as coaches, some improvement.” Ryan Chynoweth scored twice while Gray Marr and Jordan Wiest added singles for Lethbridge. Tyson Brouwer earned the win in net.
