Denise Buesink calls it a big Dutch party, but to the rest of the community, and even surrounding region, it’s the Immanuel Christian schools’ Bazaar Day.
The 38th annual event Saturday once again attracted to the school hundreds of people from Lethbridge and area who came out for the huge flea market with crafts, baked goods, toys, ethnic goodies, produce, games for children and even an auction.
“People come here for the fun and fellowship,” Buesink said.
This is no giant garage sale. Buesink, who is a member of the bazaar committee, said aside from a small used section, all the thousands of donated items — tools, crafts, food, toys, furniture, pictures — are brand new.
And the money raised is used to buy educational supplies and equipment for the elementary and high school.
Last year the bazaar raised $80,000 and helped the schools buy a bus and new floor covering in the gym.
“That was an exceptional year,” Buesink said.
This year organizers hope to raise $60,000-$70,000.
Buesink pointed out that without this major fundraiser, the schools would not be able to buy essential item, and administration would be forced to raise tuitions.
“It’s a very important event.”
Fellow committee member Benita Hummel agrees, and not just because it raises much-needed money. It also strengthens community.
“It’s a good time to reconnect with people.”
Aside from the thousands of items for sale in the big gym, there were also activities for children in the small gym, which had been converted into DK’s Galaxy Land.
Duane Konynenbelt is the force behind Galaxy Land where there was face-painting, cotton candy and dozens of games.
DK’s Galaxy Land is Hummel’s favourite part of the bazaar, but she’s also proud of the authentic ethnic food that is served, such as matworst and stamppot. Stamppot is a traditional Dutch dish made from a combination of potatoes mashed with one or several other vegetables including carrots or kale.
