Rash of drive-by shootings Sunday night Print E-mail

Lethbridge regional police are investigating three separate reports of drive-by shots being fired Sunday night around the city, likely from an air pistol.
Police were called to a north entrance at Park Place Mall at about 7:50 p.m. where a passenger in a four-door sedan was seen firing shots at a window with what appeared to be a pellet gun or air soft pistol. A witness heard several pop-pop sounds as the car drove past.
Police searched the area but didn’t find the car or any damage to the mall. A short time later, however, police received a similar report of shots being fired on the west side from a dark-coloured four-door car.
After a search of the second area again came up empty, police received a third report just before 8:30 p.m. of shots being fired from a dark, older-model sedan in Uplands. A man walking his dog along Uplands Boulevard North reported seeing the car drive by with an arm out the window holding what appeared to be pellet gun or air soft pistol.
The witness heard two shots, and then the car sped away before police arrived.
Police are reminding residents that civic bylaws prohibit the firing of guns, air soft pistols or air rifles within city limits without a permit. They also advise against pointing even toy guns in public places as it can cause undue alarm. Because real and replica guns often are hard to tell apart, police will respond to such calls as if they’re dealing with actual firearms.
