Fresh off a 6-4 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds Friday night the goals-for were down considerably for the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s hockey team during the rematch Saturday night.
That’s OK, so were the goals against.
Pronghorns netminder Scott Bowles kicked away 43 shots and forward Andrew Courtney scored early in the third for what stood up as the game-winner as Lethbridge snagged a 2-0 weekend over UBC thanks to a 2-1 victory during Canada West action at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
With the win the ’Horns sit at 3-2-1.
In a heated, physical affair in which both teams established a dislike for one another early, the teams skated through a scoreless first period.
The Pronghorns came inches from drawing first blood in the final minute of the first when Dustin Moore’s wrist shot squeaked through Thunderbird netminder Francois Thuot’s legs and brushed off the left post to keep it scoreless after 20 minutes.
Lethbridge got on the board first when Andrew Marshall teed up a shot from just inside the blueline that beat Thuot 8:33 into the second period.
The ’Horns nearly moved ahead when forward Adam Chorneyko — skating out of the corner — took a feed in front of the UBC net from Gaetano Donato, but was unable to stuff the pass home.
While Lethbridge was putting on some sustained pressure shortly after their goal, it was the Thunderbirds that came charging back the other way as defenceman Nick Duff jumped into a three-on-one and hammered a bullet off the left wing past Bowles to knot the game at 1-1 midway through the second.
The scoring chances continued for both teams, but neither was able to break the deadlock after 40 minutes as Lethbridge outshot UBC 18-11 in the second.
Courtney put the Pronghorns ahead for good 1:45 into the third, scooping up a rebound off shot from Moore and tucked the puck past Thuot for a 2-1 lead.
The Pronghorns hit the road this coming weekend when they face the University of Saskatchewan.
Ladies make it a clean sweep
VANCOUVER
The UBC Thunderbirds don’t know what hit them in a 3-2 loss to Lethbridge Saturday.
Neither does the Pronghorns women’s hockey team.
A weekend sweep — on the road — is a rare thing indeed for the U of L ladies, who improve to 3-3 with the victories. The ’Horns won 2-1 Friday night.
Dayna Janzen buried the puck past Melinda Choy with just 30 seconds left in the game, capping a great week-and-a-bit for Lethbridge, which beat the Regina Cougars in overtime last Saturday.
“It been about changing the attitude,” said sophomore head coach Chandy Kaip. “Now they know that if they work hard they will see the results.”
Kendal Tremblay and Brittney Kaye scored the other goals for Lethbridge, with rookie Jenna Durnin and second-year defenceman Amy Van Buskirk chipping in with a pair of assists.
“What can I say,” said Kaip. “The girls played great this weekend and they really deserved two wins for this.”
Kailey McMaster outdueled Choy, making 20 saves for the win. Choy faced 16 shots.
The Pronghorns will hope to move above .500 during next weekend’s homestand against the U of Saskatchewan Huskies.
’Horns thrash Mont. Western
LETHBRIDGE
University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s basketball head coach Donna Branch knows not too get too excited about Saturday’s 77-48 win over the University of Western Montana.
Although Branch was able to use her bench players a lot during the team’s 5-2 preseason success story, she said there are still some things to work on.
“There’s always something to work on. Defence, offence, you name it, we can always get better at everything,” said Branch. “But there are also a lot of thing s you do well over the course of seven games.”
The Pronghorns bench boss said the team will continue to work on defensive consistency, and recovering when the other team gets on offensive runs.
But on Saturday, there was little of that as the team closed out its preseason schedule in style.
“I’m happy but I’m never totally happy,” said Branch with a smile.
On the men’s side, the Pronghorns rebounded from a poor display Friday with a strong shooting performance in an 83-81 loss to Montana Tech in Butte, Mont.
After shooting less than 25 per cent Friday, the ’Horns shot 49 per cent. Danhue Lawrence scored 18 points, as did Derek Waldner.
