Taxes based on inflated values Print E-mail

I’m sure I’m not going to be the only one addressing the issue of property taxes for the City of Lethbridge this year! I just received my tax notice and was shocked when I saw what was enclosed. I’ve lived in the same place for 15 years, no major changes in improvements, with a slight fluctuation in my taxes over that time, with increases in reasonable amounts. This year my taxes have jumped by 49 per cent and my assessment value by 51 per cent. I realize property values were high a year ago, but I also know none of the units in my building sold for near that price!

Tom Purcell’s article in praise of “unenlightened” moms on Mothers Day was scandalous (The Herald, May 10). No doubt, you wouldn’t have any difficulty finding volunteers to move to Calgary, Red Deer or Edmonton, but the idea that a lot of staff would look forward to the Fort as a place to live is more than a little optimistic.

Bernice and I want to express our appreciation for the forthright thoughts Rich Sutter shared in The Herald May 7. Mr. Sutter was correct in stating the community knew there were problems in the Hurricane camp and to have it confirmed by someone directly involved in the circumstances is a breath of fresh air.
