City didn’t follow own guidelines Print E-mail

According to Prof. Bill Black at the University of Kansas City, governments and politicians will hide and cover issues and help crooked financial dealers to do the same during financial scandals. It is in their political interest to hide the mistakes rather than appear to be foolish with public money.
Even knowing this, I was still shocked to see what seemed to be something similar take place in Lethbridge. I recently made a presentation to city council suggesting that $30 million of lost investments ignored our city guidelines. I brought with me the actual guidelines, plus auditor general Sheila Fraser’s comments on these types of investments in another case. Fraser reported that ABCP investments were in fact not Canadian corporations at all, but trusts with names like “Symphony Trust, Opus Trust, Aurora Trust, Comet Trust, Planet Trust, Rocket Trust,” and so on.

Where has respect gone? I was so grateful and excited that a songwriter/singer such as Alan Jackson would come to Lethbridge in concert. The concert was wonderful except for the abundance of alcohol around me.
My friend was there celebrating her 60-something birthday when, before George Canyon could finish his opening act, beer was spilled all over her birthday gift shirt, her jeans and her coat. She had to endure the smelly discomfort for the rest of the evening and the drive home all the way to her small town a distance from the city. She received only a token apology.
