One of the valued roles newspapers have is to foster dialogue in their communities. In today’s rapidly evolving world of technology and communication, it is interesting to see how these changes affect society. In an effort to encourage youth to contribute their thoughts concerning various aspects of the role of newspapers, the Alberta Press Council offers an annual $2,000 scholarship for a graduating high school student going on to post-secondary studies. All this seems pretty reasonable to me, not being a pet owner. Lethbridge has four nature reserves (Helen Schuler, Alexander Wilderness, Cottonwood and Elizabeth Hall Wetlands), where dogs are not permitted (leashed or not). These areas account for probably less than five per cent of the public areas in the city, yet some dog owners choose not to respect the rules in place to protect these areas — No Dogs Allowed.
