Harper no hero for efforts in Haiti |

In 2001, George W. Bush was experiencing an ebb in popular support. An unexpected and unwished-for event gave him the opportunity to look good in the eyes of Americans. I refer, of course, to the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in New York City and Mr. Bush’s response to it. After Mr. Harper prorogued Parliament, his popularity was ebbing as well when an unexpected and unwished-for tragedy struck Haiti. Here was a “made-to-order” crisis. His government responded in predictable fashion to this event. It was no greater than what any other government of any other political stripe would have done.
