Recent news briefs from the Calgary Board of Education mentioned they were seeking names to name their new school, and the name of Pierre Trudeau was mentioned. That name was like throwing gasoline on a fire! A little historical background on Trudeau shows he was the man who stared down American oil mammoths’ attempts to take control of the “black gold” of Alberta that he wished to have shared with the whole of Canada. Trudeau’s nationalism showed in 1975 when his minority Liberal government helped establish the Petro Canada Corporation to compete with the American oil firms. You heard just a few weeks ago that Suncor had just swallowed up Petro Canada. It had been slowly sold off, piece by piece, with each successive government, and they didn’t even raise a finger over the sale.
